Almost all adults know about Viagra. It is a very common medicine which is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. This little blue pill has done wonders around the globe and solved the infertility problems of many men. You may have used it along with millions of your fellow Britishers for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). Do you know how Viagra works? How does it work inside your body? Let us give you an easy understanding of its working.

Viagra, the answer to erectile dysfunction

Viagra is the most common brand name of the drug having an active ingredient sildenafil citrate. It is a prescription drug that is used to treat ED and premature ejaculation in men. It is among the most common prescription medications used to treat premature ejaculation.

Ideally, it should be consumed one hour before sexual activity. You however need sexual stimulation for it to work. It has different doses from 25 to 100mg available on the market. You should start from the lowest dose and increase if needed. Besides the pill, it is also available as an oral suspension if you have any trouble swallowing Viagra tablets.

How does it work?

How does Viagra work? You should understand it before you take viagra. Viagra increases the timing of the erection once the erection has been achieved. To understand the working of Viagra, you should first know the mechanism of an erection. As you are sexually aroused, your brain sends signals to the penis to secrete certain chemicals called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This chemical increases the blood flow to the erection muscles of the penis by relaxing the blood vessels, thus causing the erection. After the end of intercourse, the body releases another molecule called PDE-5 that destroys the cGMP ending the erection.

Viagra works by eliminating the PDE5, thus allowing the cGMP to work for longer periods. Thus, the erection once attained will be retained for around 4 hours after taking Viagra.

Various studies however have found that the increased blood flow to the penis lasts for 4-6 hours only. After this time, your kidneys will remove it from your body and ends its actions.
