Bisoprolol Fumarate
(Zebeta) is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as beta blockers. Beta blockers work by blocking the action of the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). By blocking the action of adrenaline, beta blockers reduce the heart rate and blood pressure.
Bisoprolol fumarate is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used in some patients after a heart attack. This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Bisoprolol fumarate comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice a day with or without food. To help you remember to take bisoprolol fumarate, take it at around the same time(s) every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take bisoprolol fumarate exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Your doctor may start you on a low dose of bisoprolol fumarate and gradually increase your dose, not more than once every 2 weeks.
If you are being treated for hypertension, it may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of bisoprolol fumarate. If you are taking bisoprolol fumarate after a heart attack, it may take 3 to 4 weeks before you get the full benefit of this medication. Continue to take bisoprolol fumarate even if you feel well. Do not stop taking bisoprolol fumarate without talking to your doctor.
If you suddenly stop taking bisoprolol fumarate, your heart may race or beat irregularly and you may have increased blood pressure. To avoid these effects, your doctor will gradually lower your dose over a period of weeks or months depending on how long you have been taking bisoprolol fumarate. When stopping this medication, your doctor may also want to slowly reduce the dosage over a period of days or weeks to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as chest pain and short

In some cases, a patient may experience more serious side effects such as low blood sugar levels, slow heart rate and fainting. If you experience any severe side effect after taking bisoprolol, seek medical attention immediately. You should also let your doctor know if you develop any symptoms of an allergic reaction such as: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling in the mouth or throat; rash etc. Talk to your doctor if you have any other concerns while taking bisoprolol.
3. Drug Interactions
Bisoprolol may interact with other medications you are taking. To avoid interactions, your doctor should manage all of your medications carefully. Be sure to tell your doctor about all the drugs you take including prescription and nonprescription drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements. Do not start or stop any new medication without first talking to your doctor.
The following medications may interact with bisoprolol:
ACE inhibitors such as lisinopril, captopril and enalapril
Angiotensin receptor blockers such as losartan and valsartan
Calcium channel blockers such as amlodipine and diltiazem
Diuretics (water pills) such as hydrochlorothiazide
Digoxin
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin
Certain antidepressants such as fluoxetine and paroxetine.
Bisoprolol may also interact with other substances, including food items, vitamins and herbal supplements. Talk to your doctor if you are taking any of these substances while on bisoprolol therapy. Do not change your dosage or stop taking a medication without first talking to your doctor. Certain interactions may require a dose adjustment or additional monitoring. Your doctor will be able to tell you whether it is safe for you to take bisoprolol in combination with the medications or substances listed above.
4. Overdose
If you take too much bisoprolol, you may experience an overdose. Symptoms of a bisoprolol overdose include:
Slow heart rate
Low blood pressure
Dizziness
Fainting.
If you think you have taken too much of this medication, seek emergency medical attention right away. Do not try to treat an overdose yourself; call poison control or go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately.
5. Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of bisoprolol, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. 6. Storage
