Brevinor is a birth control pill, also known as 'the pill' that contains two hormones which work to prevent pregnancy. Brevinor is a combined pill that can be over 99% effective when taken correctly.
What is Brevinor and how does it work?
Brevinor contains two types of female sex hormones, norethisterone (progesterone) and ethinylestradiol (oestrogen). Together these hormones work to alter the lining of the womb so that it makes it more difficult for an egg to be implanted. Secondly, this pill can thicken the mucus in the neck of the womb which makes it more difficult for sperm to penetrate.
Is Brevinor right for me?
If you are looking for an effective oral contraceptive, Brevinor may be right for you. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:
- If you are allergic to norethisterone, ethinylestradiol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- If you are currently pregnant
- If you have ever had a blood clot or are at risk of a blood clot
- If you have severe heart, liver or kidney problems
- If you have high or low blood pressure
- If you have (or have had) a high level of fats in your blood, or other disorders of body fats
- If you have ever had a migraine with an aura
- If you are suspected of having cancer of the breast, cervix, vagina or womb
- If you have unexplained bleeding from the vagina
- If you are taking medication for hepatitis C

How to take Brevinor?
Always take Brevinor exactly as prescribed by your doctor or advised by the pharmacist.
- Brevinor should be taken every day for 21 days
- Take your pill at the same time every day
- Start by taking a pill marked with the correct day of the week
- Follow the directions of the arrows on the strip and take a pill every day until you have finished all 21
- Then have 7 pill-free days
- Start your next strip of Brevinor after the 7 pill-free days, even if you are still bleeding
- It can be taken with or without food, if necessary with a small amount of water
- You must not take Brevinor if you are pregnant
- It is not advised to take Brevinor while breast-feeding
Warnings and Precautions
Brevinor may not be safe if taken with other medication or recreational drugs. Please inform the prescriber if you are taking any of the listed medications.

What happens if I have a missed pill on Brevinor?
If you have a missed pill on Brevinor, you should take the missed pill as soon as possible. If it is less than 12 hours since you were meant to take the pill, then the missed pill will still be effective. However, if it is more than 12 hours since you were meant to take the pill, then the missed pill will not be effective and you will need to use additional contraception for the next 7 days. It is important to speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about missed pills.
