What is Diclofenac?

Diclofenac sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat the signs of inflammation, i.e., fever, swelling and pain. Various preparations of Diclofenac sodium are available, e.g., ophthalmic solutions, tablets etc. 

How does it work?

Diclofenac sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. These drugs block the cyclo-oxygenase enzyme, which is involved in the production of prostaglandins. These prostaglandins are important mediators of inflammation. By blocking this enzyme, Diclofenac tablets help treat the symptoms of inflammation.

Dosage

The commonly used dosage guidelines for Diclofenac 50mg tabletS. 

The dosage depends upon your age and the purpose of use.

For osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis

  • The dose of Diclofenac sodium is 1 tablets (50mg) 2-3 times per day or 2 tablets (100mg) twice daily. 
  • The maximum daily dose allowed is 150mg (3 tablets).

For ankylosing spondylitis

  • The recommended dose for adults is one 50mg tablet 2 times daily. One additional tablet can be used before bedtime. 

For dysmenorrhea

  • Two tablets (25mg) thrice daily or as recommended by the physician.

Is the Diclofenac a good pain killer?

Diclofenac is an excellent pain killer for general and musculoskeletal pain and reduces the signs of inflammation. However, for more severe types of pain, you may need to resort to more potent painkillers.

Which is more potent? Ibuprofen or Diclofenac?

Diclofenac is more potent than ibuprofen. That's why ibuprofen is safe for children and minor pain. However, if ibuprofen is not working, you may need to go for Diclofenac.

What if I feel no relief with Diclofenac?

If you have no relief, you may resort to more potent NSAIDs, steroids or even analgesics for pain treatment at the instruction of your doctor.

Is ibuprofen the same as Diclofenac?

No. Both are different drugs but belong to the same group. Ibuprofen is available over the counter, while Diclofenac is strictly available on prescription. Ibuprofen has more margin of safety and is safe for children too.

Is ibuprofen safe during pregnancy?

Diclofenac is a very potent NSAID and is not suitable for pregnant women, particularly in the first 20 weeks, unless prescribed by the doctor. Besides disturbing the pregnancy, it can cause kidney and Heart issues in the baby.

Can I use alcohol and coffee with Diclofenac?

Diclofenac can cause stomach upsets. To avoid these side effects, it is better to use them with food and avoid alcohol, coffee and spicy foods.
