What is Lipitor?
Lipitor is a statin medication. Statins are lipid (fat) regulating medications that stabilise the fatty, hardened parts of the arteries, known as plaques that may form when you have high cholesterol.
How does it work?
Lipitor lowers cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It works by slowing down the production of the LDL-cholesterol in the liver. The liver then takes cholesterol out of the blood, which lowers the cholesterol levels in the blood.
Is Lipitor suitable for me?
Lipitor is intended for use when lifestyle changes to diet and exercise have been unable to lower cholesterol levels on their own. If you are at a higher risk of heart disease, Lipitor can be used to reduce the risk even when cholesterol levels are normal.

You should not take Lipitor if you are allergic to atorvastatin, or if you have liver disease.
Lipitor may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Some people taking Lipitor to develop joint pain, muscle aches, or weakness. These side effects usually go away after a short time. Tell your doctor if you have any unusual side effect that bothers you or does not go away.
Lipitor 20mg
Do not breast feed while taking Lipitor 20 mg. This medication may pass into breast milk and could harm a nursing baby. If you use a breast pump during this time, throw out any milk you collect. Do not feed it to your baby.
Lipitor can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects if the mother takes the medication during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Lipitor.
If you have been instructed by your doctor to follow a special diet (such as low-cholesterol), be sure to follow the diet closely. Do not share Lipitor with other people, even if they have the same symptoms that you have. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Lipitor as it may increase some of the side effects of atorvastatin, such as liver damage or stomach pain.
Avoid eating foods that are high in fat or cholesterol while taking Lipitor. Lipitor works best if you take it with a low-fat meal.
To be sure Lipitor is not causing harmful effects, your blood may need to be tested often. You may also need eye exams and tests for diabetes. Visit your doctor regularly.
Keep using this medicine as directed, even if you feel well. High cholesterol has no symptoms. You may need to take Lipitor on a long-term basis for the treatment of high cholesterol.
