Marvelon is a combined contraceptive pill, containing two hormones, ethinylestradiol and desogestrel. These are similar to the natural hormones oestrogen and progesterone in your body.

How does it work?
Marvelon will prevent an egg from being released in the ovaries and will make it more difficult for sperm to pass into the womb by thickening the mucus in the cervix.

Marvelon Patient leaflet
Marvelon works by:
- Preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary)
- Making the fluid in your cervix thicker (this makes it more difficult for sperm to travel through to the womb)
You take one pill every day for 21 days, then have a 7 day break. During this break you will usually get a withdrawal bleed that is similar to your normal period. You then start taking the pills again for another 21 days.
Marvelon is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. This means that if 100 women use Marvelon for one year, less than one woman will get pregnant.
If you vomit or have diarrhoea within 3-4 hours of taking a pill, it may not have been absorbed properly. Follow the instructions in the leaflet about what to do in this situation.
Marvelon can be used by most women, including those over 35 years old and those who smoke. However, there are some medical conditions which mean that Marvelon isn't suitable for you – You'll need to have a consultation with a pharmacist to make sure it's the right medication for you.

Can Marvelon treat acne?
While Marvelon is not specifically approved for the treatment of acne, it can be an effective way to manage the condition. This is because Marvelon works by decreasing the amount of testosterone in the body, which can help to reduce the severity of acne. Additionally, Marvelon can also help to regulate the menstrual cycle, which can further reduce the occurrence of acne breakouts. If you are considering using Marvelon to treat your acne, it is important to speak to your healthcare provider first to ensure that it is the right option for you.
How do you use Marvelon pills?

If you start taking the pills later than this, you will need to use a backup method of contraception for the first seven days. To ensure that the pills are as effective as possible, it is important to take them at the same time each day. You can take Marvelon with or without food.
