What is Rabeprazole?

Rabeprazole is a medicine that reduces the amount of acid made in the stomach to reduce symptoms associated with acid reflux, heartburn and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). This medication may also be prescribed to treat an ulcer in the upper part of the intestine or Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.

How does it work?

Rabeprazole is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) medication and contains the active substance rabeprazole sodium. This medicine works by preventing the proton pumps located in the stomach from working properly, which reduces the amount of stomach acid that is made. 

Is Rabeprazole suitable for me?

This medication is suitable for use by most adults. Do not take Rabeprazole if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or breastfeeding.

Side Effects

  • Cough, sore throat (inflammation of the pharynx), runny nose.

  • Weakness or loss of strength, flu like symptoms.

Dosage

Commonly Used Dosage Guidelines for Rabeprazole.

For the treatment of Duodenal ulcer and benign gastric ulcer:

  • 20mg of Rabeprazole tablets to be taken once daily in the morning. Most patients with duodenal ulcer are treated for four weeks and most patients with benign stomach ulcer are treated for six weeks. However a few patients may require additional treatment to achieve healing

For the treatment of GORD with ulcer:

  • 20mg of Rabeprazole tablets to be taken once daily for four to eight weeks

For long term treatment of GORD:

  • 10mg or 20mg of Rabeprazole tablets once daily depending upon response

For the symptomatic treatment of GORD:

  • 10mg of Rabeprazole tablets once daily for 4 weeks. Once symptoms have cleared your doctor may tell you to take 10mg of Rabeprazole tablets once daily when needed for subsequent symptom control.

When Rabeprazole tablets are taken once daily, the tablets should be taken in the morning before breakfast

What to do if you forget to take Rabeprazole?

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as usual.

If you forget to take your medicine for more than 5 days, talk to your doctor before taking any more medicine.

Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for a forgotten dose.
