Kaliumiodid ist ein Salz aus Jod und Kalium. Es enthält nicht radioaktives Jod und wird in Strahlungsnotionen verwendet, um zu verhindern, dass radioaktiver Jod in die Schilddrüse gelangt. Es schützt die Schilddrüse vor radioaktiven Jodverschmutzung, ein erhebliches Risiko für Strahlenexposition. Kaliumiodid bietet einen Schutz für etwa 24 Stunden, wirkt jedoch nicht als allgemeines Radioprotektionsmittel und verhindert nur, dass die Schilddrüse radioaktives Jod absorbiert.
