A topical drug called antipyrine and benzocaine (A&B) is used to treat ear infections' aching and burning. In the majority of nations, it is sold over-the-counter (OTC).

A&B stops the spread of infection by numbing the injured area. It is frequently used to provide short-term pain and discomfort relief for ear infections like swimmer's ear.

It's crucial to carefully follow the directions on the package insert if this is your first time using A&B. A&B shouldn't be applied to open wounds or skin that has been broken; instead, they should only be used to temporarily relieve symptoms.

It's also critical to remember that A&B does not treat ear infections and does not stop them from coming back. You should visit your doctor for a more thorough evaluation if your symptoms worsen or continue to persist.

Pharmacokinetics

The half-life of antipyrine is 3.8 hours in adults and 5.4 hours in kids. The half-life of benzocaine is 2.7 hours in adults and 3.4 hours in kids.

While benzocaine is primarily eliminated through the liver, antipyrine is primarily eliminated through the kidneys.

Side Effects

Mild irritation at the application site is A&B's most typical adverse reaction. With continued use, this usually isn't a big deal and goes away by itself.

Additional negative effects include:

(Rashes, hives, itching, and breathing difficulties) Allergic reactions

  • nausea and diarrhoea
  • Diarrhea
  • Unsteadiness or faintness

Stop using A&B and go to the doctor right away if you experience any of these side effects. Although uncommon, severe allergic reactions to A&B can be fatal. You may be more likely to experience an allergic reaction to A&B if you have a history of allergies or asthma.

Safety

When used as instructed, A&B is generally safe for the majority of users. You should be aware of some risks, though.

If you have an allergy to antipyrine, benzocaine, or any other component of A&B, avoid using it.

A&B should not be applied to broken skin or open wounds. Your risk of contracting an infection or developing other issues may rise as a result.

If not prescribed by your doctor, avoid using A&B if you are breastfeeding or pregnant. If the medication enters breast milk and harms a nursing infant is unknown.

A&B usage is safe for you to use if you don't have any other medical conditions, such as kidney or liver disease.

A&B should not be given to children under the age of 2 unless specifically instructed to do so by a physician. In this age group, the medication's efficacy and safety have not been proven.

Interactions

A&B and known drug interactions are nonexistent. As with all medications, it is best to consult your doctor or pharmacist before beginning any new medication, including over-the-counter (OTC) items.

Dosage and Administration

5–10 drops of A&B should be administered into the painful ear four times per day for seven days. The dose for itching is 2-4 drops into the affected ear, as needed, for up to 48 hours.

A&B should not be used outside of your doctor's prescribed timeframe or frequency. Your risk of experiencing negative effects could go up, or your symptoms might get worse.

Additionally, the bottle needs to be thoroughly shaken before use. Tilt your head to the side and gently pull back on your earlobe to apply the ear drops. To help the medication absorb, put the recommended number of drops into the ear canal and then tilt your head back for at least a minute.

Do not touch the dropper's tip to your ear or any other surface to avoid contamination. After use, make sure to tightly cap the bottle and keep it out of children's reach.

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about how to use A&B.

Overdose

If you believe you have used too much of this medication, seek immediate medical attention at an emergency room or a poison control center. Overdose symptoms could include:

  • Unsteadiness or faintness
  • nausea and diarrhoea
  • Diarrhea
  • (Rashes, hives, itching, and breathing difficulties) Allergic reactions

Stop using A&B and go to the doctor as soon as you notice any of these symptoms. A&B overdoses rarely result in death, but they can have serious side effects. Never give A and B to someone else, especially if they have a history of allergies or asthma.

Missed Dose

A&B should be taken as soon as you remember if you miss a dose. Skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular dosing schedule if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take A and B at the same time.

Storage

A&B should be kept at room temperature away from moisture and light. Avoid freezing. When not in use, keep the bottle tightly closed. A&B shouldn't be kept in the bathroom or close to any other heat or moisture sources. After seven days, dispose of any leftover food.
