Q: What are the symptoms of genital herpes?

Symptoms of genital herpes include blisters on the penis, vagina, scrotum or buttocks (near or around the anus). You can also get blisters on the mouth, lips or any area that came into contact with the area of infection. The blisters may itch or tingle before they appear and may turn into open sores that ooze fluid. The viral infection may also cause headaches, body aches and a fever.

What are genital herpes?

Genital herpes is an outbreak of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV that can cause genital herpes HSV-1 and HSV-2. The virus enters the body through a skin abrasion or mucous membrane (thin layer of tissue that lines the openings of the body) where they begin to multiply.

How is genital herpes treated?

Genital herpes medication can be used to reduce an outbreak and lessen painful symptoms but not cure the virus completely. Antiviral medications are taken at the first signs of an outbreak and will speed up the healing of the painful sores. There are also preventative medications available to reduce the likelihood of future outbreaks.
