Il contient de l'iode non radioactif et est utilisé dans les urgences de rayonnement pour empêcher l'iode radioactif d'entrer dans la glande thyroïde. Il protège la thyroïde de la contamination radioactive de l'iode, un risque significatif d'exposition aux rayonnements. L'iodure de potassium offre une protection pendant environ 24 heures mais n'agit pas comme un agent radioprotecteur général, empêchant uniquement la thyroïde d'absorber l'iode radioactif.
