Ensure a new, clean lens filter is in place for accurate readings; the thermometer won't work without it. Press the memory button to activate the LCD, displaying all segments. When the ready symbol appears, the thermometer is ready. For accurate readings, if right-handed, use the right hand and ear; if left-handed, use the left. Perform an ear tug to straighten the ear canal for a clear view of the eardrum. For children under 1 year, pull the ear straight back; for those 1 year and older, pull up and back. Use your free hand to grasp the outer ear. To take your own temperature, wrap your free hand around your head and grab your ear from behind. While tugging, insert the probe snugly into the ear canal and press the activation button, releasing it upon hearing a beep. This confirms the measurement is complete. Remove the thermometer and the LCD will display the temperature. Replace the lens filter after each use by pressing the ejector button and attaching a new one. A new measurement can be taken if the ready symbol is displayed. The thermometer will turn off automatically if no button is pressed within 2 minutes. In certain situations, take three readings in the same ear and use the highest if they differ: for infants under 90 days, children under three with critical conditions, or when learning to use the thermometer. Note that slight temperature variations can occur with consecutive measurements. The right ear reading may differ from the left, so always use the same ear. Ensure the ear is free from obstructions or excess wax. External factors like lying on an ear, covering ears, exposure to extreme temperatures, or recent swimming/bathing can affect readings. Wait 20 minutes before taking a temperature in these cases. The last reading before shutdown is stored in memory. To access memory mode, press the /mem button. A new temperature can be taken in memory mode if the ready symbol is shown. The Braun ThermoScan thermometer is accurate for all ages but should not be used in certain situations, such as with blood or drainage in the ear canal, deformities preventing full probe insertion, or with hearing aids/ear plugs (remove and wait 20 minutes before use). Use the untreated ear if ear drops or medications are present. Never clean inside ears to avoid damage; consult a doctor for excess wax. Fever may not be present in some illnesses, especially in infants under 90 days, those on certain medications, or with compromised immune systems.
