Scooters légaux routiers

Road legal scooters provide a practical, cheap and eco friendly solution to getting around - combining convenience and fully compliant to UK road law. Road legal scooters, in comparison to off-road or private-use scooters, are suitable for public highway use because they meet the requirements set forth by the DVLA for number plates, MOTs, legal use and what is required for safety to ride in public. Road-ready scooters are a good option whether you are commuting in the city or just a rider riding in the countryside, because they combine style, safety and functionality. Welzo has a vast collection of over 400 different types of mobility scooters.

What is a road-legal scooter?

To be considered "road legal", a scooter must:

  • Have a number plate, insurance and an MOT (if over 3 years old).
  • - Incorporate safety features such as headlights, brake lights, indicators, mirrors, and a horn. The braking system must also meet legal requirements.
  • Comply with UK environmental emission and noise regulations.

Experts in urban transport point out that you verify your scooter is road legal before you ride. According to the British Motorcycle Federation (BMF), riding an unregistered or road unroadworthy scooter is illegal and punishable with a fine or points, and seizures.

Types of road-legal scooters

- Petrol scooters: Reliable, cheap and quick to fuel, suitable for a long journey.

- Electric scooters (e-scooter): Silent, clean and cheap to commute on. Some newer e-scooter range and rapid charge well.

- 125cc scooters: The most popular among new riders with a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) license, that will offer power for clearance around the city or suburbs.

Why have a road-legal scooter?

  • Cost friendly, low cost to run compared to cars or motorbikes.
  • Eco-friendly, particularly on e-scooters with a low carbon footprint.
  • Easy to park, the best solution in cities and highly congested locations.
  • Accessible, many can be ridden on a provisional license Theory and CBT qualification. If you are looking for even more convenient types of mobility aids, check out our folding mobility scooters

Industry professionals have knowledge and note the increase in UK scooter sales indicates a wider movement towards sustainable personal transportation solutions. According to a report carried out by the Motorcycle Industry Association, scooters hold a large chunk of the low-emission vehicle market.  When choosing, think about your license type, daily mileage, whether your travelling on road or off road and the storage option for your scooter. Be aware if you decide on an electric scooter either if it is pre-registered or requires DVLA paperwork. Invest in a good helmet (to meet the legal requirements to wear a helmet in the UK), good lock and maintenance packager (to maintain safety and regulations).

With the right decision, a road legal scooter is not just a transport - road legal scooters can provide freedom, efficiency, and cleaner transportation.
