Въглищният катран се използва за лечение на кожни състояния в продължение на стотици години, но механизмът му на действие все още не е известен, поради сложния си състав.

Въглищният катран има леки антисептични и противовъзпалителни свойства, както и способността за облекчаване на сърбежа. Освен това се абсорбира от кожните клетки, където се смята, че инхибира репликацията на ДНК. Това забавя клетъчното делене и предотвратява прекомерната клетъчна пролиферация. Това от своя страна намалява сгъстяването и мащабирането на кожата и изчиства плаките на псориазис.
