The headline difference isn't liquid versus capsule. It's that these two products contain almost nothing in common microbiologically — and the price gap between them is larger than most people expect.

Different organisms, different formats, different price brackets — not like-for-like.

They aren't the same product

Most "X vs Y" probiotic comparisons assume the products are doing the same job. These aren't.

Symprove contains four traditional lactic acid organisms — Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum — all catalogued with NCIMB reference numbers.

Welzo Ultra Purity Akkermansia is built around Akkermansia muciniphila, a next-generation organism that lives in the gut's mucus layer rather than the lumen, plus L. acidophilus, inulin, berberine, astaxanthin and chromium.

The only genuine overlap is L. acidophilus. Everything else is different — see Akkermansia vs traditional probiotics.

What Symprove offers

Three things it does genuinely well, and they're worth stating plainly since we're comparing it to our own product:

  • Properly catalogued strains. All four carry NCIMB numbers — better labelling than a great many capsules manage, and it means you can look the organisms up.
  • A real research programme. Symprove has funded academic work, including at UCL, which is more than most probiotic brands do.
  • Multi-strain coverage of the traditional lactic acid organisms, in a non-dairy, gluten-free, vegan-friendly format.

The water-based delivery argument is its main marketing plank. Professor Simon Gaisford of UCL School of Pharmacy has described it this way: "Symprove is different from other probiotics because it is water-based, which means it limits exposure to gastric juices and digestive enzymes." That is a coherent mechanistic argument — liquid doesn't trigger a full digestive cycle the way a meal does, so transit is quicker.

Clinical note: You will also see the claim that Symprove was the only product of eight tested to pass arrival, survival and thriving tests. That comes from an in-vitro study — a laboratory model, not a clinical trial — and it was manufacturer-originated. Surviving in a lab model is a reasonable proxy, not a demonstration of better symptom outcomes. Read our fuller assessment in the Symprove review and the head-to-head in Symprove vs OptiBac.

Two practical drawbacks. It requires a morning routine — 70ml on an empty stomach, then a ten-minute wait before eating — and an initial 12-week course. And it is currently sold out, which is worth knowing before you plan around it.

What the Welzo formula offers

Per two-capsule serving: Akkermansia 60 billion AFU, L. acidophilus 64 billion CFU, berberine 700mg, inulin 200mg, astaxanthin 2.4mg and chromium 10µg — all quantities disclosed rather than hidden in a proprietary blend.

The design logic is that the two organisms occupy different territory: Akkermansia in the mucus layer against the gut wall, L. acidophilus in the lumen. They aren't competing for the same ground.

Three honest caveats. Akkermansia has a far younger evidence base than the lactic acid organisms in Symprove — it's an emerging area resting on a small number of human studies. The inulin is 200mg, which is formulation-level rather than a genuine prebiotic dose, since prebiotic research uses grams. And the berberine at 700mg has a real interaction profile that Symprove simply doesn't carry — covered in the safety section.

The cost gap

This is where the two diverge most sharply.

Product Price Approx. per day
Symprove, 4 × 500ml £80.01 ~£2.81
Welzo Ultra Purity Akkermansia From £21.99 Substantially lower
Swanson L. plantarum, 30 caps £5.93 ~20p

Over Symprove's recommended 12-week course, £2.81 a day comes to roughly £236. We've included a budget capsule in that table deliberately — because the honest framing isn't Symprove versus us, it's that the probiotic price range in the UK spans more than tenfold, and cost tracks format and brand far more than it tracks evidence.

Does the liquid format matter?

Possibly, but less than the price difference implies.

The water-based delivery argument is mechanistically sound. What doesn't exist is a good head-to-head trial comparing a liquid probiotic against an equivalent capsule for the same clinical outcome. Without that, "more arrives alive" remains a surrogate measure rather than a demonstrated advantage — the same reasoning we apply to spore-based probiotics.

Capsules have their own solutions to the same problem: delayed-release shells and enteric coatings. See do probiotics survive stomach acid and our general drinks vs capsules comparison.

Clinical note: The factor that most reliably predicts whether a probiotic helps is whether you actually finish the course. A £2.81 shot abandoned in week four does less than a capsule taken daily for three months. Whichever you choose, choose the one you'll stick with.

Which suits you?

Symprove suits you if you want traditional, catalogue-referenced lactic acid strains; you prefer a liquid or struggle with capsules; you like the discipline of a fixed morning routine; and the cost is comfortable. It's the more conventional, better-established microbiological proposition.

The Welzo formula suits you if you're specifically interested in Akkermansia and the mucus-layer niche; you want disclosed quantities in a single capsule; cost matters; or you need something that travels. It's the more novel proposition, with a correspondingly younger evidence base.

Neither suits you if you take prescription medication and haven't checked the berberine interactions, or if you're hoping a probiotic will resolve symptoms that haven't been investigated. And for many people, a well-chosen budget capsule at 20p a day is the sensible starting point before spending more — see best probiotics UK.

Side effects and who should avoid them

Both are well tolerated by most people, with mild bloating or wind in the first week or two the usual reports — see probiotic side effects.

Speak to a doctor before taking either if you

  • Take any regular prescription medicine — the Welzo formula contains berberine, which inhibits CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein and interacts with diabetes medication, statins, anticoagulants and immunosuppressants. See berberine interactions
  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive — berberine must be avoided entirely in pregnancy
  • Are significantly immunocompromised, or have a central venous catheter
  • Have inflammatory bowel disease, or a heart valve abnormality or history of endocarditis
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Are considering it for a child

Note that Symprove contains Enterococcus faecium. This is used safely in commercial products, but is a further reason to seek advice first if you are immunocompromised. More in probiotics safety.

On labelling: probiotics carry no authorised health claim in GB or the EU. Both are sold as food supplements and cannot legally be marketed as treating any condition.

When to see a doctor

See your GP — or seek urgent care — if you have:

  • Blood in your stool, or black tarry stools
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • A change in bowel habit lasting three weeks or more
  • Severe abdominal pain, or pain that wakes you at night
  • Difficulty swallowing, or persistent vomiting
  • Persistent bloating rather than occasional bloating
  • A family history of bowel cancer, coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease

Spending more on a probiotic is not the answer to symptoms that aren't improving. See when to see a GP and bowel cancer screening.

Frequently asked questions

Is Symprove better than Welzo's probiotic?

They aren't comparable in the way the question implies — they contain almost entirely different organisms. Symprove offers four catalogue-referenced lactic acid strains in a liquid; the Welzo formula offers Akkermansia plus L. acidophilus in a capsule with additional actives. We stock both, and which is better depends on what you want.

Is Symprove worth £80?

It works out around £2.81 a day, or roughly £236 over the recommended 12-week course. You're paying for the liquid delivery system, catalogued strains and the brand's research programme. Whether that's worth ten times a budget capsule is a personal judgement — the evidence doesn't establish it's ten times more effective.

Why is Symprove sold out?

Stock varies. Check the listing for current availability before planning a course around it.

Can I take both?

There's no safety reason not to, but there's rarely a reason to pay for both at once. Pick one, take it consistently for the full course, then reassess.

Does the liquid format really work better?

The mechanistic argument is reasonable, but there's no good head-to-head trial against an equivalent capsule for a clinical outcome. Treat "more arrives alive" as a plausible proxy rather than a proven advantage.

Which is better for IBS?

Neither is specifically indicated for IBS. Effects are strain-specific, so check what's named on the label against your symptom pattern — and get IBS properly diagnosed first.

Which is better if I take medication?

Symprove, most likely — it contains no additional actives. The Welzo formula includes 700mg of berberine, which has a significant interaction profile and needs checking against any prescription.

Is Symprove suitable for vegans?

Yes — it's non-dairy, gluten-free and vegan-friendly. The Welzo capsules are vegetable cellulose (HPMC), so also suitable.

How long before I notice anything?

Symprove recommends an initial 12-week course. For capsules, allow at least four weeks. See how long probiotics take to work.

Is there a cheaper option that still works?

Effective single-strain capsules start around 20p a day. If you've never taken a probiotic, trialling a cheap one for a month before committing to a £236 course is the sensible sequence.

Medical disclaimer: This article is for general information and education only and does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Welzo sells both products compared in this article, including one of its own brand; this conflict of interest is disclosed above and no overall winner is declared. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet, and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Probiotic effects are strain-specific. Claims regarding in-vitro survival are laboratory findings, not clinical outcomes. Products containing berberine interact with numerous medicines via CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, including diabetes medication, statins and anticoagulants, and berberine must be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Probiotics should be discussed with a doctor before use if you are immunocompromised, critically unwell, have an indwelling venous line, or have inflammatory bowel disease.
