Tru Niagen (NR) vs Welzo NMN Pro 1000 Reviews

Tru Niagen NR vs Welzo NMN Pro 1000 comparison

Tru Niagen vs NMN is one of the most-searched questions in the whole NAD⁺ supplement category — and for good reason. Both are "NAD⁺ boosters," both are sold on a promise of more energy and healthier ageing, and both are backed by real human studies. But they are different molecules, they behave differently in the body, and — importantly for UK buyers — they sit in very different places under British food law. Both sit inside the wider category mapped out in our pillar guide to longevity supplements, and for this molecule specifically the full grounding is in our NMN benefits, side effects and dosage guide. If you already know what you want, you can buy NMN supplements in the UK, browse the full range of anti-ageing and longevity supplements, or go straight to the Welzo NMN Pro 1000. This guide compares Tru Niagen (a branded form of nicotinamide riboside, or NR) against the Welzo NMN Pro 1000 (nicotinamide mononucleotide, or NMN), using the latest peer-reviewed head-to-head data so you can choose the right one for your goals and budget, and covers dosing, timing, side effects and how the two formats compare.

Tru Niagen vs NMN: the quick verdict

If you want the short answer: nicotinamide riboside (NR / Tru Niagen) has the longer, deeper human evidence base and is the form currently authorised for sale as a food supplement in Great Britain. NMN (such as Welzo NMN Pro 1000) is a more direct NAD⁺ precursor with a fast-growing evidence base, favoured by many in the longevity community, but it is still classed as a "novel food" under assessment in the UK.

The two are closer cousins than the marketing suggests. NMN is structurally almost identical to NR — it simply carries one extra phosphate group — and inside the body the pathways overlap. The most useful way to decide is to weigh four things: the strength of the human evidence, how much each raises NAD⁺, price per gram, and the UK legal position. We cover all four below.

What are NR and NMN?

Both NR and NMN are precursors — raw materials your cells use to build NAD⁺ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme found in every living cell. NAD⁺ powers energy production in the mitochondria, DNA repair, and the activity of "longevity" enzymes called sirtuins. Blood and tissue NAD⁺ levels fall as we age, which is why raising them has become a central theme in longevity science. You can read more about why this matters in our explainer on the hallmarks of ageing and our full NAD⁺ supplement guide.

What is nicotinamide riboside (Tru Niagen)?

Nicotinamide riboside is a form of vitamin B3. Tru Niagen, made by ChromaDex (now Niagen Bioscience), uses a patented crystalline salt called Niagen® (nicotinamide riboside chloride), chosen for stability and consistent manufacturing. NR's headline biochemical feature is that it can enter many cells directly through nucleoside transporters before being converted onward to NAD⁺. It has been studied in humans since the mid-2010s and has one of the largest bodies of clinical safety data of any NAD⁺ precursor.

What is NMN (Welzo NMN Pro 1000)?

Nicotinamide mononucleotide is NR with an added phosphate group, placing it one enzymatic step from NAD⁺ in the salvage pathway. The Welzo NMN Pro 1000 delivers 1,000 mg of β-NMN at 99% purity per two-capsule serving, in a vegan HPMC capsule, with no unnecessary fillers and third-party batch testing. NMN is the molecule most associated with longevity researcher Professor David Sinclair, and it is the version many enthusiasts choose when they want a direct precursor at a higher daily dose. If you're new to the category, our guide on how to start longevity supplements is a good starting point.

How they both make NAD⁺

Think of NAD⁺ as a currency your cells constantly spend and must constantly replenish. NR and NMN are two denominations of the same currency: both feed the salvage pathway that regenerates NAD⁺. The debate in "tru niagen vs nmn" is really about which denomination the body banks most efficiently — and here the newest human data has genuinely moved the conversation.

The NAD plus salvage pathway Nicotinamide riboside is converted to nicotinamide mononucleotide, which is then converted to NAD plus. NMN is one enzymatic step from NAD plus. How NR and NMN become NAD⁺ NR nicotinamide riboside NMN nicotinamide mononucleotide NAD⁺ energy • DNA repair • sirtuins + phosphate (NRK) 1 step (NMNAT) Both precursors feed the same salvage pathway that regenerates NAD⁺.
Both NR and NMN feed the NAD⁺ salvage pathway; NMN sits one enzymatic step from NAD⁺.

What the human evidence actually shows

Until recently, no one had tested NR and NMN in the same people at the same dose. In 2025–2026 that changed, and the results are worth understanding in full.

The 2026 Bergen head-to-head (Berven et al., iScience)

An independent team at the University of Bergen and Haukeland University Hospital in Norway ran a crossover pharmacokinetic trial in which the same participants took both NR and NMN at 1,200 mg/day, each acting as their own control. Over eight days, NR raised whole-blood NAD⁺ from a baseline of roughly 27 µM to about 70.5 µM — an average increase of around 161% — compared with about 67% for NMN, a roughly 2.3-fold advantage for NR. The effect was clear enough that the researchers ran the remainder of the study with NR alone [1]. Crucially, the team bought both products off the shelf with no manufacturer involvement, which makes the comparison unusually credible.

One honest caveat: this stage involved only six healthy adults. That is typical for an early pharmacokinetic study, but it is a small sample, and the researchers themselves noted meaningful variation between individuals. It is strong signal, not final proof.

The 2025 Nature Metabolism comparison

A separate, larger 2025 study published in Nature Metabolism compared NR, NMN and nicotinamide (Nam) against placebo over 14 days. In that trial, both NR and NMN roughly doubled circulating NAD⁺ and were broadly comparable, while nicotinamide did not sustainably raise NAD⁺ [2]. Put the two studies side by side and the fair summary is: NR has an edge on raw NAD⁺ elevation in the most direct head-to-head, but NMN clearly and reliably raises NAD⁺ too. For a deeper dive, see our companion article on Tru Niagen vs NMN.

NR's clinical track record

NR's evidence base is the deeper of the two. A landmark 2018 randomised, placebo-controlled crossover trial in 30 healthy middle-aged and older adults found chronic NR supplementation was well tolerated and effectively raised NAD⁺, with early signals for lower blood pressure and arterial stiffness [3]. A larger 8-week trial of Niagen® in overweight adults found that 100, 300 and 1,000 mg doses raised whole-blood NAD⁺ by 22%, 51% and 142% respectively, with no significant difference in side effects versus placebo and no flushing [4].

NMN's clinical track record

NMN's human data is newer but growing fast. A 2023 randomised dose-ranging trial in healthy middle-aged adults reported significant NAD⁺ increases across NMN doses up to 900 mg/day, good short-term tolerability, and exploratory improvements in physical performance [5]. In a widely cited 2021 Science study, 250 mg/day of NMN over 10 weeks improved muscle insulin sensitivity in prediabetic postmenopausal women [6]. NMN's bigger "anti-ageing" claims remain unproven in humans — a point every honest brand should make.

Tru Niagen vs Welzo NMN Pro 1000: head-to-head

Dose and NAD⁺ increase

Tru Niagen is typically sold at 300 mg per serving in the UK (the authorised limit), with clinical studies using up to 1,000 mg. The Welzo NMN Pro 1000 provides a full 1,000 mg per serving. Higher dose does not automatically mean higher NAD⁺ — the Berven data suggests NR is more efficient per milligram — but many NMN users deliberately choose a higher-dose product. If you're unsure how much to take, our NMN dosage by age guide breaks it down.

Purity and third-party testing

Independent testing matters enormously in this category, because past market surveys have found NMN products that under-delivered on their label claim. The Welzo NMN Pro 1000 is third-party tested at 99% purity, and Tru Niagen's Niagen® ingredient is manufactured under GMP with its own testing regime. Whichever you choose, insist on a certificate of analysis, and read our guide to third-party tested supplements to know what "tested" should actually mean.

Price and value per gram

Because NR/Niagen® is patented, Tru Niagen usually carries a premium price. NMN — including the Welzo NMN Pro 1000 — often works out cheaper per gram of active ingredient, especially at higher doses. If value is your priority, compare current prices on the Welzo NMN Pro 1000 page and see our roundup of the cheapest NMN in the UK. Don't let price be the only factor, though — purity and testing come first.

Increase in blood NAD plus from baseline in human trials Nicotinamide riboside at 1200 mg raised blood NAD plus by about 161 percent and NMN at 1200 mg by about 67 percent in the 2026 Berven crossover trial; nicotinamide riboside at 1000 mg raised it by about 142 percent in the 2019 Conze trial. In the most direct human head-to-head, NR out-raised NMN at the same 1,200 mg dose — though the sample was only six people. See references [1] and [4].

UK regulatory status (read this before you buy)

This is the part most comparison articles skip, and it genuinely matters. In Great Britain, nicotinamide riboside chloride is an authorised novel food, with the Food Standards Agency setting a maximum daily intake of 300 mg for adults; it is not authorised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for under-18s [7]. NMN, by contrast, is currently classified as a novel food "under assessment" and is not yet formally authorised as a food supplement in Great Britain, although it is widely sold while its application is reviewed [8].

In the United States, the picture differs again: the FDA confirmed in 2025 that NMN may lawfully be sold as a dietary supplement. Regulatory status is not a verdict on safety or effectiveness — it reflects where each ingredient sits in a lengthy approval queue — but it is a real, practical difference between the two products and you should factor it into your decision. If you want to understand the wider debate, our article Is NMN a scam? tackles the hype honestly.

Which should you choose?

Choose Tru Niagen (NR) if…

  • You want the ingredient with the largest and longest human evidence base.
  • You prefer the form that is currently authorised as a UK food supplement.
  • You're comfortable with a 300 mg daily dose and a premium price.
  • You value a single patented, heavily tested ingredient over a higher milligram count.

Choose Welzo NMN Pro 1000 if…

  • You want a direct NAD⁺ precursor at a higher 1,000 mg dose.
  • You're drawn to the molecule most associated with longevity research and the "Sinclair protocol".
  • You want strong value per gram with 99% purity and third-party testing.
  • You're building a stack — NMN pairs naturally with TMG and resveratrol (see below).

Explore the full NMN supplements range to compare capsule, sublingual and stack formats, and read our guide to buying NMN in the UK for what to look for at checkout.

Can you take NR and NMN together?

Some people do combine precursors, but there's little human evidence that stacking NR and NMN outperforms a single well-dosed precursor — you may simply be paying twice to raise the same NAD⁺ pool. For most people, picking one and taking it consistently is the sensible approach. If you do want to layer, do it under professional guidance.

Safety, side effects and who should avoid them

In clinical trials, both NR and NMN have generally been well tolerated at studied doses. NR trials up to 1,000 mg/day reported side-effect rates no different from placebo and no flushing [4]. When side effects do occur with either precursor, they tend to be mild and dose-related — think occasional nausea, digestive upset or headache. You can read more in our overview of NMN benefits, side effects and dosage.

Who should be cautious or avoid these supplements: anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, taking prescription medication, or living with a chronic health condition (including a history of cancer) should speak to a doctor or pharmacist before starting, because NAD⁺ metabolism interacts with many biological pathways and the long-term human data is still maturing. This is general information, not personalised medical advice.

How to take NMN for best results

If you land on NMN, a few practical points help you get the most from it:

  • Timing: Many people take NMN earlier in the day to align with the body's natural NAD⁺ rhythm. Our when to take NMN guide covers morning vs evening dosing.
  • With or without food: Welzo NMN Pro 1000 is designed to be taken with water, preferably with food. See NMN with food for the detail.
  • Do you need TMG? Methylation "donors" like TMG are often paired with NMN. Whether you personally need it is covered in do I need TMG with NMN?
  • Stacking: NMN is commonly combined with resveratrol and TMG in the popular NMN, TMG and resveratrol stack. The ready-made Sinclair Protocol Stack and NMN & TMG stack bundle these together.
  • Format: Prefer faster absorption? Compare capsules with sublingual NMN.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tru Niagen better than NMN?

In the most direct human head-to-head to date, NR (the form in Tru Niagen) raised blood NAD⁺ roughly 2.3 times more than NMN at the same 1,200 mg dose, and NR has a longer clinical track record [1][3]. However, that trial had only six participants, and a separate 2025 study found NR and NMN comparable [2]. "Better" depends on whether you prioritise the deepest evidence base (NR) or a higher-dose direct precursor at better value (NMN).

Is NMN the same as nicotinamide riboside?

No, but they're close relatives. NMN is nicotinamide riboside with one extra phosphate group. Both feed the same NAD⁺ salvage pathway, which is why they're so often compared.

Does Tru Niagen contain NMN?

No. Tru Niagen uses patented nicotinamide riboside chloride (Niagen®), not NMN. When people search "tru niagen vs nmn," they are really comparing NR against NMN as two different NAD⁺ precursors.

Which raises NAD⁺ more, NR or NMN?

The 2026 Bergen crossover trial found NR raised whole-blood NAD⁺ more than NMN at 1,200 mg/day [1], while a 2025 Nature Metabolism study found the two roughly comparable over two weeks [2]. Both reliably raise NAD⁺; the size of the edge for NR varies by study.

Is NMN legal in the UK?

NMN is currently classed as a novel food "under assessment" in Great Britain and is not yet formally authorised as a food supplement, though it is widely sold while its application is reviewed [8]. Nicotinamide riboside chloride is authorised, with a 300 mg/day adult limit [7].

What is a good NMN dose?

Human trials have used roughly 250–900 mg/day, with some going to 1,000 mg. The Welzo NMN Pro 1000 provides 1,000 mg per serving. See our NMN dosage by age guide for tailored ranges.

Are there side effects to NR or NMN?

Both are generally well tolerated at studied doses, with side effects — when they occur — typically mild and dose-related, such as nausea or digestive upset [4]. Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, on medication or with a health condition should consult a clinician first.

Should I take NMN with TMG?

TMG is a methyl donor sometimes added to offset methylation demand from high-dose NAD⁺ precursors. Whether you personally need it depends on your dose and diet — see do I need TMG with NMN?

Can I take Tru Niagen and NMN together?

You can, but there's little evidence that stacking two precursors beats one well-dosed precursor, since both raise the same NAD⁺ pool. Most people are better off choosing one and taking it consistently.

How long until NMN or NR works?

Blood NAD⁺ typically rises within about two weeks of daily dosing and then plateaus [1]. Any subjective effects are individual and gradual. See how long supplements take to work.
