Ugljeni katran ima blaga antiseptička i protuupalna svojstva, kao i sposobnost ublažavanja svrbeža. Također ga apsorbiraju stanice kože, gdje se misli da inhibira replikaciju DNK. To usporava diobu stanica i sprječava prekomjernu proliferaciju stanica. To, zauzvrat, smanjuje zadebljanje kože i skaliranje i čisti plakove psorijaze.
