The butyrate supplement market has settled into a straightforward marketing argument: sodium butyrate is the old form that gets absorbed too early and smells appalling, while tributyrin is the clever new form that survives digestion and reaches the colon.

There is also a more awkward question that neither side of the butyrate debate raises, which is whether either form beats simply eating more fibre.

The short answer

Tributyrin has the better delivery argument and is far more tolerable. A large proportion of oral sodium butyrate is absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract before reaching the colon, which is why it is often sold enteric-coated [1]. But the evidence for tributyrin's superiority is thin. The comparative data comes substantially from an animal study in poultry, and the main human data — 32 adults, 300 mg tributyrin for 21 days — produced microbiome changes that were not statistically significant versus placebo, measured no clinical outcomes at all, and was published as a conference poster abstract rather than a full peer-reviewed paper [1,3]. Meanwhile most UK adults eat about 20 g of fibre against a 30 g target [2], and fibre is what your gut bacteria ferment into butyrate, in the colon, continuously. Fix that first.

What butyrate is and why it matters

Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fibre in the colon. It is not primarily something you eat — it is something your microbiome manufactures on site, from the material you give it.

Its importance is not disputed. Butyrate is the preferred fuel for colonocytes, the cells lining the colon, which derive a large share of their energy from it directly rather than from circulating glucose. It is also involved in maintaining gut barrier integrity, modulating inflammation and regulating immune activity.

That biology is why "postbiotic" butyrate supplements exist. The reasoning runs: butyrate is good, some people may not produce enough, so take it directly. The reasoning is coherent. The execution is where it gets complicated.

The assumption hidden in that reasoning

The postbiotic argument assumes that a metabolite delivered as a capsule is interchangeable with the same metabolite produced continuously by bacteria at the site where it acts. That is an assumption, not an established fact, and it applies to this entire product category.

There is a reasonable counter-argument. In the colon, butyrate is generated steadily throughout the day by fermentation, in direct contact with the cells that consume it, alongside acetate and propionate and everything else fermentation produces. A once-daily capsule delivering a bolus of a single short-chain fatty acid to an uncertain location is a meaningfully different exposure.

It might still help. But the burden of proof sits with the product, and — as the trials below show — that burden has not yet been discharged.

The delivery problem both forms are trying to solve

Here is the engineering challenge that defines this entire comparison.

Butyrate is needed in the colon — the far end of the digestive tract. But butyrate and its salts are readily absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Swallow plain sodium butyrate and a large proportion is taken up long before it arrives anywhere useful [1].

This is the opposite of the usual supplement problem. Most compounds struggle to be absorbed at all. Butyrate is absorbed too easily, too early, in the wrong place.

Every butyrate product on the market is an attempt to solve that: enteric coatings, microencapsulation, slow-release matrices, or a chemically different form that resists early release. Tributyrin belongs to the last category.

Worth holding on to: a delivery innovation is only valuable if the payload does something once it arrives. Improving the pharmacokinetics of a compound that has not demonstrated clinical benefit improves the pharmacokinetics, not your health. Sodium butyrate is butyric acid paired with sodium. It is the cheaper, longer-established and more widely available option, and it is what Welzo currently stocks.

The disadvantages

  • Early absorption. A large proportion is taken up in the upper GI tract before reaching the colon, which is precisely why enteric-coated and slow-release versions exist [1].
  • The smell. Butyric acid is the compound responsible for the odour of rancid butter and vomit. Uncoated products are genuinely unpleasant, and the smell lingers on hands and in cupboards. This is not a trivial point — a supplement people abandon has an efficacy of zero, which is the argument we make throughout the minimal supplement stack.
  • Sodium content, which is modest at typical doses but worth noting if you are managing blood pressure or on a sodium-restricted diet.

Tributyrin: the delivery argument

Tributyrin is a triglyceride: a glycerol backbone with three butyrate molecules attached. It is the form of butyrate that occurs naturally in butter [1].

The theoretical case

Because the butyrate is esterified rather than free, tributyrin behaves like a dietary fat rather than a salt. The proposal is that it passes the stomach and upper intestine relatively intact, is broken down further along by pancreatic lipase, and therefore releases butyrate closer to where it is needed. It also has far less odour, because the butyric acid is bound rather than free.

That is a genuinely sensible piece of formulation chemistry. If you were designing a butyrate delivery system from scratch, you might well arrive here.

Now look at who is making the argument

When a comparison strongly favours one option, the first question is who benefits from that conclusion.

The most emphatic "tributyrin is superior" material online — including detailed technical comparisons stating that tributyrin is the best form of butyrate because it reaches the colon — is published by ingredient suppliers who manufacture and sell tributyrin [4].

What the comparative evidence actually consists of

According to ConsumerLab's independent review, the preliminary evidence that tributyrate may have more beneficial intestinal effects than sodium butyrate comes from an animal study — specifically, research published in a poultry science journal — with more research in people needed to confirm it [1].

We are not dismissing animal work. But "the better form" is a strong claim to build on chicken data, and it is being made on product pages aimed at humans.

A third option worth knowing about

These behave broadly like sodium butyrate in terms of the early-absorption problem, with two practical differences: no added sodium, which matters if you are managing blood pressure, and the mineral itself contributes a small amount to your intake. What the human trials actually show

Set aside the form debate for a moment. Does butyrate supplementation in any form do much?

Microbiome — the tributyrin data

A pilot study of 32 men and women, average age 29, gave 300 mg of tributyrin for 21 days. It modestly altered the ratio of certain potentially beneficial bacteria and butyrate-producing bacteria in stool — but these changes were not statistically significant compared with placebo, and the study measured no clinical outcomes whatsoever [1].

There is a further detail worth knowing, because it is routinely omitted from product pages citing this work. It was presented as a poster abstract at a conference and published in a journal supplement, not as a full peer-reviewed research paper [3]. Abstracts are not subject to the same review as full papers, and they report results in a few hundred words without the methods detail needed to appraise them properly.

So the flagship human evidence for tributyrin is a null result, on a surrogate endpoint, in a conference abstract.

Weight and metabolism — a clear negative

An Italian study of 46 overweight or obese adults following a low-calorie diet gave 625 mg of sodium butyrate three times daily — 1,875 mg per day — for 12 weeks. It did not produce greater fat loss than placebo [1].

That is a reasonably sized trial at a substantial dose over a meaningful period, and it found nothing.

IBS — the most promising signal

Two small studies suggest butyrate may reduce pain and urgency of bowel movements, and may reduce abdominal pain and bloating in some people with IBS — with the reviewers noting that larger, better-designed studies are needed to prove a benefit [1].

This is where butyrate looks most plausible, and notably it is a clinical application in people with a diagnosed condition, not a healthy-ageing intervention. That distinction runs through this whole category — see longevity supplements that probably don't work.

The option that probably beats both

Both forms exist to solve the problem of getting butyrate into the colon. Your gut bacteria solve that problem effortlessly, continuously, and for free — provided you feed them.

NHS guidance sets dietary fibre intake at 30 g a day for adults, and notes that most adults are only eating around 20 g, with evidence that eating plenty of fibre is associated with lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer [2]. The British Heart Foundation puts the average nearer 17 g against the same 30 g target [5].

So the typical UK adult has a 10 g daily fibre gap — a gap directly upstream of the compound they are considering buying in capsule form.

  • Right location. Produced in the colon, by definition, without any delivery challenge to engineer around.
  • Continuous rather than a bolus. Fermentation is ongoing, not a once-daily spike.
  • You get the other short-chain fatty acids too, plus everything else fibre does.
  • The outcome evidence exists. Fibre intake has population-level associations with major disease outcomes [2,5]. Butyrate supplements do not.

See a doctor rather than self-treating if you have persistent changes in bowel habit, blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, or symptoms that are new and have lasted more than a few weeks.
