Whole foods provide multiple fibre types plus polyphenols and micronutrients, and support the plant diversity linked with microbial diversity. Food first, supplement to fill gaps, is the pragmatic approach for most people.

Do bananas count as a prebiotic food?

Yes. Bananas contain roughly 0.5 g each of inulin and oligofructose per 100 g, plus resistant starch that is highest when the fruit is slightly green and decreases as it ripens. They are a modest but very convenient daily source, particularly in porridge or smoothies.

Can I take prebiotics and probiotics at the same time?

Yes. Combining them is the basis of synbiotic products, and providing substrate alongside live cultures is a logical strategy. Introduce one change at a time so you can identify what is helping, and increase prebiotic intake gradually to limit gas. If you are immunocompromised or have a serious underlying condition, speak to your clinician first.
