What are the different types of birth control pills?

There are several kinds of birth control medications available for women. Oral contraceptive tablets are often the most popular. There are multiple types of birth control pills, such as:

- Combined pill. This contraception is called the combined pill as it contains a synthetic version of the two female hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. It mimics the action of these hormones, which prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg (known as ovulating). It will also make it more difficult for both sperm and eggs to implant in the lining of the womb.

- The progesterone-only pill, also known as the POP or mini pill). This pill works similarly to a combined pill but contains no oestrogen. It will also thicken the mucus in the cervix to stop the sperm from reaching an egg.

Are birth control tablets safe in the long term?

Depending on your medical history, a progesterone-only pill can be taken until menopause. Like every medication, there may be side effects that differ for each person. The combined pill is safe for use for women up to the age of 35.
There is scientific evidence that using birth control pills for longer periods of time can increase your risk of some cancers. However, this risk will decline after you stop taking the pills.

What can I expect to happen when I take contraception tablets?

You will normally need to take your first pill on the first Sunday after your period starts. You should use a backup contraceptive method, such as a barrier protector (i.e. condom), for the first seven days. You will also need to get into a routine of taking the pill at the same time each day, as they are most effective when taken consistently.

Are there any alternative treatments to oral contraception?

Yes, there are many different options for birth control. Other types of contraception include;

- Vaginal ring is a soft small plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina and lasts for about 21 days. It releases oestrogen and progesterone to prevent an egg from releasing and making it difficult for sperm to implant onto the womb's lining.

- Male and female condoms are made of thin latex, rubber or plastic that stop sperm from reaching the womb.

- Cap, the cap is a circular dome made out of silicone that is used in conjunction with a spermicide to kill sperm and prevent it from reaching the womb.

- A contraceptive patch delivers hormones to your body that work in the same way as the combined pill.

- Contraceptive implant: a thin rod that is inserted into the arm that releases progesterone into the body.

- The contraceptive injection works similarly to the implant and releases progesterone to prevent pregnancy.

- Diaphragm, a circle of silicone that is inserted into the vagina prior to sex in addition to a spermicide to prevent sperm from reaching the womb.

- Female sterilisation is an operation that will block the fallopian tubes and prevent any eggs from being fertilised or coming into contact with sperm

- IUD, an intrauterine device, also known as the coil, will stop sperm from reaching the egg and prevent an egg from implanting in the womb.

- Vasectomy, a minor operation for men that involves cutting or sealing the tubes that carry sperm so that it cannot reach the seminal fluid and be ejaculated during sex.
