Cerelle as a contraceptive

Cerelle is a progestogen-only birth control pill, also known as a POP (progesterone-only pill) or mini-pill. It contains desogestrel 75 mcg, which is a synthetic progesterone like hormone. Progesterone-only pills are a suitable alternative for people who cannot take oestrogen such as when breastfeeding, smokers and patients that are overweight.

What is Cerelle and how does it work?

Cerelle contains a synthetic hormone desogestrel that prevents ovulation and thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to penetrate the womb. Cerelle is over 99% effective if taken correctly. It is also ideal for patients who require a progesterone-only contraceptive and are allergic to soya or peanuts. 

Is Cerelle right for me?

Cerelle is a highly effective contraceptive, however it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:

• If you are allergic to desogestrel or any other ingredients in this medicine
• If you have thrombosis 
• If you have ever had a blood clot or are at risk of a blood clot
• If you have severe heart, liver or kidney problems
• If you are suspected of having breast cancer
• If you have unexplained bleeding from the vagina
• If you are taking medication for hepatitis C

All medications can cause potential side effects, below we have listed some potential side effects of Cerelle. However, these do not always occur and are mostly mild in nature. But if you experience any prolonged or worrying side effects of Cerelle, please discontinue the medication immediately and consult your doctor.

• Mood altered,
• Decreased sexual drive,
• Depression,
• Headache,
• Nausea,
• Acne,
• Breast pain,
• Irregular or no menstruation,
• Weight gain.

It contains desogestrel, which prevents ovulation and thickens cervical mucous, which can lead to pregnancy. It is available by prescription only. Some common side effects of Cerelle include headache, nausea, breast tenderness, and bleeding between periods. Cerelle may also be beneficial in treating heavy periods and endometriosis.
