Description

Cerelle as a Contraception

Cerelle is a progestogen-only birth control pill, also known as a POP or mini-pill. The Cerelle pill works to prevent pregnancy and regulate menstruation symptoms while reducing monthly bleeding

Progesterone-only pills are a suitable alternative for people who cannot take oestrogen such as when breastfeeding, if you smoke or if you are overweight.

What is Cerelle and how does it work?

The Cerelle pill contains the synthetic hormone desogestrel and works to thicken the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to penetrate the womb. Cerelle is slightly different than other progesterone-only pills as in most cases, it contains a high enough dose to prevent the egg from ripening. As such, Cerelle is highly effective contraception when taken correctly.

Is Cerelle right for me?

If you are looking for an effective oral contraceptive, Cerelle may be right for you. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:

  • If you are allergic to desogestrel or any other ingredients of this medicine
  • If you have thrombosis
  • If you have ever had a blood clot or are at risk of a blood clot
  • If you have severe heart, liver or kidney problems
  • If you are suspected of having breast cancer
  • If you have unexplained bleeding from the vagina
  • If you are taking medication for hepatitis C

Additional Information

Cerelle contraceptive is a hormonal contraceptive that is taken once a day to prevent pregnancy. It contains two hormones, estrogen and progestin, which work together to prevent ovulation and keep the uterus from becoming lined with thickened tissue, which can lead to pregnancy. Cerelle also thins the blood and may help to protect against ovarian cancer. It is available by prescription only. Some common side effects of Cerelle include headache, nausea, breast tenderness, and bleeding between periods. Cerelle is not recommended for women who smoke, are over 35 years old, or have high blood pressure, heart disease, or a history of stroke.
