Prolactin is a hormone that is secreted by the pituitary gland. It is important for lactation (milk production) in women who are breast-feeding. It is also important for regulation of the menstrual cycle and for normal sexual function in both men and women.  Prolactin levels can be high for many reasons, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, stress, certain medications, and some medical conditions. High prolactin levels can cause problems such as infertility, missed periods, and erectile dysfunction in men. In women, high prolactin levels can cause problems such as irregular periods, ovulation problems, and reduced sex drive.

Additional Information

A high prolactin level can indicate a problem with the pituitary gland, such as a tumour. A low prolactin level can indicate a problem with the thyroid gland or ovaries.

A prolactin blood test is usually performed as part of a routine panel of blood tests. The test is simple and painless, and involves drawing a small amount of blood from a vein in your arm. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Results are typically available within a few days.

If you are scheduled for a prolactin blood test, be sure to tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, as they can interfere with the results. Also, be sure to eat and drink normally before the test. You may be asked to avoid strenuous exercise for 12 hours before the test.

If you have questions or concerns about the prolactin blood test, be sure to talk to your doctor.
