What are genital herpes?
Genital herpes is an outbreak of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV that can cause genital herpes HSV-1 and HSV-2. The virus enters the body through a skin abrasion or mucous membrane (thin layer of tissue that lines the openings of the body) where they begin to multiply.
How is genital herpes treated?
Genital herpes medication can be used to reduce an outbreak and lessen painful symptoms but not cure the virus completely. Antiviral medications are taken at the first signs of an outbreak and will speed up the healing of the painful sores. There are also preventative medications available to reduce the likelihood of future outbreaks.
According to NICE, genital herpes affected 30,658 people in England during 2015, these cases were predominantly in heterosexual people.
According to WHO, an estimated 491.5 million people were living with the HSV-2 infection in 2016, equating to 13.2% of the world's population aged between 15-49 years.
“It is characterized by sores or blisters in the genital area. There is no cure for genital herpes, but there are treatments that can help to control the symptoms. There are two types of treatments for genital herpes: antiviral medications and home remedies. Antiviral medications can help to reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks, and they can also help to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others!”
