Description

What is Aciclovir?

Aciclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Symptoms of the virus include genital herpes, cold sores and blisters/red sores in the affected areas. The Aciclovir medication will not cure herpes completely but will reduce the symptoms and help to treat further growth from future. Aciclovir can also be prescribed to treat other infections, such as shingles or chickenpox which are caused by a similar virus.

How does Aciclovir work?

The Aciclovir tablets work to prevent the growth and spreading of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Aciclovir tablets work by inhibiting the activity of a viral enzyme called DNA polymerase, which is essential for the replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and other related viruses such as varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Aciclovir is highly selective for virus-infected cells and has little effect on normal uninfected cells.

Is Aciclovir suitable for me?

If you're experiencing any symptoms of the herpes virus or a cold sore growth, Aciclovir may be right for you. Consult your physician for the best treatment. However, it may not be suitable for you if the following applies:

  • If you are alleregic to Aciclovir, Valaciclovir or any of its other ingredients
  • If you have liver or kidney problems
  • You have severe breathing difficulties
  • Taking certaing medications e.g Probenecid, Theophylline, Cimetidine etc
