What is Aciclovir?

Aciclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Symptoms of the virus include genital herpes, cold sores and blisters/red sores in the affected areas. It does not cure herpes completely, however reduces the symptoms and prevents the worsening of the symptoms. Aciclovir can also be prescribed to treat other herpes viral infections, such as shingles or chickenpox.

How does Aciclovir work?

Aciclovir tablets work to prevent the growth and spread of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Aciclovir tablets work by inhibiting the activity of a viral enzyme called DNA polymerase, which is essential for the replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and other related viruses such as varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Aciclovir is highly selective for virus-infected cells and has little effect on normal uninfected cells.

Is Aciclovir suitable for me?

Aciclovir is a very effective treatment for different types of herpes simplex viruses however, it may not be suitable for you if the following applies:

• If you are allergic to Aciclovir, Valaciclovir, Famciclovir, Penciclovir or any of its other ingredients
• If you have liver or kidney problems
• If you have severe breathing difficulties
• Taking certain medications e.g. Probenecid, Theophylline, Cimetidine etc
• If you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding

Commonly Used Dosage Guidelines for Aciclovir.

Adults Herpes Simplex:

• Take for at least 5 days, 200mg, five times each day
• Take every four hours while awake (for example, 6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm) 

Shingles (Herpes zoster):

• Take for 7 days, 800mg, five times each day 
• Take every four hours while awake (for example, 6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm)

Herpes simplex suppression:

• 200mg four times each day or 400mg twice daily
