Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) or thyrotropin is secreted by the pituitary gland, located in the head, and can help identify cases of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Both the excess and under-secretion of TSH can lead to weight loss, anxiety, palpitations, irregular sleep patterns and irregular menstrual cycles. Hypothyroidism is majorly associated with overlapping symptoms such as menopause.
Free Thyroxine (FT4)
FT4 or free thyroxine is one of the two critical hormones produced by the thyroid gland. While it is produced in greater abundance as compared to FT3, it is thought of as a reservoir for FT3 whenever the body needs and this leads to conversion of FT4 into FT3. Most of the thyroxine is not attached to a protein and the Menopause blood test helps to identify if there's a deficiency/excess of the hormone to detect thyroid related ailments.
Free Triiodothyronine (FT3)
FT3 or free tri-iodothyronine is one of the two critical hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Its deficiency/excess is responsible for most of thyroid-related health issues because of its stronger impact even though it constitutes the lesser fraction as compared to the other hormone, FT4. Menopause blood test detects the amount of FT3 which is not attached to a protein and helps to understand thyroid functioning.
Hypothyroidism
The Thyroid Blood Test is suitable for individuals experiencing one or more of the following symptoms of hypothyroidism:
1. Rapid weight gain
2. Fatigue
3. Muscle weakness and stiffness in joints
4. Depression
5. Disturbed periods
Additional Insight from Dr Sameer Nakedar, MBBS, MRCGP, PGCert
Overactive thyroid conditions usually show a high level of T4 and/or T3 and, in most cases, a low TSH. Symptoms can include weakness, diarrhoea, weight loss, irritability, warm skin, fast heart rate, tremor and eye problems, along with other symptoms.
In underactive thyroid states (hypothyroidism), the TSH is usually high. This TSH rise tries to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine. Usually, the T4 and/or T3 levels are low but can be normal.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include weight gain, fatigue, skin thinning and dryness, hair thinning, constipation, depression and low mood, muscle cramps, pain and numbness, low heart rate, irregular periods and cold sensitivity, along with other symptoms.
Hyperthyroidism
The Thyroid Blood Test is suitable for individuals experiencing one or more of the following symptoms of hyperthyroidism:
1. Hyperactivity and anxiety
2. Insomnia/disturbed sleep cycle
3. Muscle weakness and stiffness in joints
4. Irregular heart rate
5. Weight loss
Additional Information
Are you feeling tired all the time, despite getting a good night's sleep? Do you find it difficult to lose weight, no matter how hard you try? You might be suffering from an underactive thyroid. The Advanced Thyroid Function Blood Test is designed to help you get to the bottom of your thyroid problems. Armed with this information, you can work with your doctor to get your thyroid back on track.
A thyroid blood test is a simple blood test that measures the level of thyroid hormones in your body. With this test, you can optimise your thyroid hormone levels and ensure that they're within the healthy range. Thyroid blood tests are used to diagnose thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. They can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for these conditions. If you have symptoms of a thyroid disorder, your doctor may order a thyroid blood test to help make a diagnosis. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, weight gain, and constipation. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include weight loss, anxiety, and tremors.
During the test, a small sample of blood will be taken from a vein in your arm. The sample will be sent to a lab for analysis. The results of the thyroid blood test will help your doctor determine whether you have a thyroid disorder and, if so, what type of disorder you have. They can also help your doctor decide on the best treatment for you. If you are diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, it is important to follow your doctor's instructions for treatment. Untreated thyroid disorders can cause serious health problems. Treatment may include taking medication or having surgery. Always talk to your healthcare provider about your specific health needs.
A healthy thyroid keeps a person hale and hearty
Thyroid gland is one of the most essential elements of the endocrine system as it plays a critical role in regulating heart rate, metabolism, brain functioning and bone growth. To stay one step ahead, it is always advisable to opt for a regular thyroid checkup because a healthy thyroid is the key to staying fit.
Experts Opinion on Thyroid Blood Tests
"Thyroid function tests look at three hormone levels. In normal states, the pituitary gland in the brain releases thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), stimulating the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4.
This thyroid function test can help you understand if your thyroid function is normal, overactive, or underactive."
