What is nasal congestion?

Nasal congestion, also known as sinus pressure, is the stuffed/blocked feeling you get in your nose when it becomes irritated or inflamed. This can occur when you come into contact with an irritant or allergen and your body begins its histamine response. It may also be a symptom of an illness such as a cold or flu.

How can I treat a blocked nose?

A decongestant will shrink the swollen blood vessels and tissues which then relieves the congestion that has been caused by a cold or illness. An antihistamine will relieve the sniffling and sneezing symptoms that have been triggered by an allergy or hay fever. These treatments are available as a spray or oral tablet.

Nasal sprays and drops can be bought over the counter from pharmacies. Decongestants may also be available over the counter or on prescription from your GP!”
