Nappy rash, also known as diaper rash, is a common condition that affects babies and toddlers, typically manifesting as a red, irritated, and sometimes painful rash in the diaper area. It's often caused by prolonged skin contact with a wet or soiled diaper, which can damage the skin's protective barrier and make it more vulnerable to irritation and infection.

Nappy rash can be triggered by various factors, including:

  1. Infrequent diaper changes, leading to prolonged exposure to urine or stool.
  2. Friction caused by a tight-fitting diaper or by the diaper rubbing against the skin.
  3. Introduction of new foods, which can alter the composition of the child's stool and potentially cause irritation.
  4. Use of certain baby products, such as soaps, lotions, or wipes, that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.
  5. Yeast infections, particularly common in babies taking antibiotics.

While nappy rash can be distressing for both the baby and the caregiver, it's usually easily treatable and preventable. Changing diapers frequently, allowing the diaper area to air out regularly, and applying a barrier cream or ointment to protect the skin can all help to prevent nappy rash. If the rash persists or worsens despite these measures, it's recommended to consult a healthcare provider, as a prescription cream or medication may be needed.
