What is Lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole belongs to a group of medicines called Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medicines are useful in the treatment of conditions that require a reduction in the amount of acid the stomach produces. They are not antacids which work by neutralising the stomach acid, but inhibit the acid production instead. It can be used to treat acid reflux, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), stomach ulcers and even a rare condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

How does Lansoprazole work?

Lansoprazole reduces the acid production by binding to the H+/K+ adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) enzyme on the parietal cells in the stomach, which is a part of the proton pump, thereby inhibiting acid production. It has a long duration of action, hence only needs to be taken once or twice daily as per the symptoms.

Is Lansoprazole suitable for me?

Lansoprazole can be used to treat many conditions that require reducing excess stomach acid. However it may not be suitable for you if the following applies to you:

• If you are allergic to lansoprazole or any of the ingredients in the medication
• If you are allergic to other proton pump inhibitors such as pantoprazole, omeprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole etc.
• If you taking any medicines to treat HIV e.g nelfinavir
• taking Rifampicin
• have severe liver problems
