Begin dental care for your pet early in life to prevent disease. Incorporate toothbrushing into the daily routine. For small dogs, you can hold them on your lap while brushing to ease their anxiety, or have one person hold the dog while another brushes. Some dogs may prefer being on a grooming table. Approach your dog from the side and make them comfortable. Start by touching the muzzle and lifting the lips to reveal the teeth and gums. Apply a small amount of toothpaste on your finger and let your dog taste it. Most dogs enjoy the poultry-flavored toothpaste. Then, lift the lips and use your finger or a finger-brush to apply toothpaste to the teeth and gums. Once your dog is comfortable with this, use a soft nylon bristle brush to clean the teeth. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the brush and gently clean one or two teeth, including the gumline, using small circular motions. Gradually increase the number of teeth brushed until the entire mouth can be cleaned in one session, which usually takes 3-4 weeks. Focus on the buccal surfaces of the teeth, especially near the gum margin. Once your dog is comfortable with this, try to open the mouth to brush other surfaces. If this is not possible, continue with daily brushing of the buccal surfaces.
