Wegovy contains Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is indicated for the treatment of adults with obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater, or overweight (BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, or dyslipidaemia.
How does it work?
Wegovy contains the active ingredient semaglutide which acts by mimicking the effects of the body's endogenous GLP-1 hormone. GLP-1 is an incretin hormone that regulates appetite and food intake. When bound to its receptor, semaglutide promotes insulin secretion, reduces glucagon secretion, and slows gastric emptying. These combined actions contribute to the reduction in appetite, increased satiety, maintenance of blood glucose levels, and weight loss.
What is the difference between Wegovy injection and pills?
Wegovy pills and Wegovy injections both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and are designed to help with long-term weight loss. The biggest difference is how they're taken. Wegovy pills are swallowed once a day, while Wegovy injections are self-administered just once a week using a pre-filled injection pen.
If you don't like needles, Wegovy pills offer a needle-free alternative. However, Wegovy injections have shown greater weight loss in clinical studies. People taking Wegovy pills lost an average of 17% of their body weight, while those using Wegovy injections achieved an average weight loss of 21%.
Both treatments are started at a low dose, which is gradually increased to help your body adjust and reduce the risk of side effects. With Wegovy pills, the dose increases every 30 days until the maximum daily dose of 25 mg is reached, although many people choose to remain on a lower dose long term if it continues to work well for them. Wegovy injections follow a similar dose escalation schedule, with the dose increasing every four weeks until the recommended maintenance dose is reached.
The side effects are similar for both treatments, with the most common being nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, particularly while increasing the dose.
Wegovy pills are also a more affordable option, with prices starting from £, compared with £ for Wegovy injections.
Whether you choose Wegovy pills or injections will depend on your personal preferences, weight loss goals and lifestyle. If avoiding injections and paying less are your priorities, the tablets may be the better fit. If achieving the greatest possible weight loss is your main goal, the injections may be worth considering.
