What is Gedarel?

Gedarel is a combined contraceptive pill that is taken for 21 days, containing both oestrogen and progesterone.

Gedarel as a Contraception

Gedarel is a combined monophasic contraceptive pill that contains the two hormones oestrogen and progesterone. This pill comes in two doses. The lower dose of 20/150 contains a lower dose of oestrogen than most combined contraceptive pills which may make it more suitable for people who are more susceptible to side effects.

What is Gedarel and how does it work?

The hormones in Gederal work to prevent pregnancy in three ways. The release of an egg from the ovaries is prevented, the lining of the uterus is altered to prevent an egg from developing and the mucus in the cervix becomes thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to travel.

Is Gedarel right for me?

If you are looking for an effective oral contraceptive, Gedarel may be right for you. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:

If you have an allergy or hypersensitivity to the ingredients in Gedarel
If you have ever had a blood clot or are at risk of a blood clot
If you have severe heart, liver or kidney problems
If you have high blood pressure
If you have high levels of lipids in the blood
If you have ever had a migraine with aura
If you are suspected of having cancer of the breast or genital organs
If you have endometrial hyperplasia

How to take Gedarel?

Always take Gedarel exactly as prescribed by your doctor or advised by the pharmacist.

Gedarel should be taken every day for 21 days
Take your pill at the same time every day
Start by taking a pill marked with the correct day of the week
Follow the directions of the arrows on the strip and take a pill every day until you have finished all 21
Then have 7 pill-free days
Start your next strip of Gedarel after the 7 pill-free days, even if you are still bleeding
It can be taken with or without food, if necessary with a small amount of water
You must not take Gedarel if you are pregnant
It is not advised to take Gedarel while breast-feeding

Side Effects

All medications can cause potential side effects, below we have listed some potential side effects of Gedarel. However, these do not always occur and are mostly mild in nature. But if you experience any prolonged or worrying side effects of Gedarel, please discontinue the medication immediately and consult your doctor.

Common side effects include:

Mood swings
Tender breasts
Weight gain
Headaches
Nausea
Anxiety
Dizziness
Stomach pain
Acne
Irregular bleeding

Warnings and Precautions

Gedarel may not be safe if taken with other medication or recreational drugs. Please inform the prescriber if you are taking any of the listed medications.

DO NOT take Gedarel:

If you have an allergy or hypersensitivity to the ingredients in Gedarel

Additional Information

Gedaral 20 contains a lower dose of oestrogen and can have fewer symptoms.

Gedarel 30 is a full-dose version of the Gedarel 20 pill.
