Potassium Iodide is a salt composed of iodine and potassium. It contains nonradioactive iodine and is used in radiation emergencies to prevent radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid gland. It protects the thyroid from radioactive iodine contamination, a significant radiation exposure risk. Potassium Iodide provides protection for about 24 hours but does not act as a general radioprotective agent, only preventing the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine.
