What is Esomeprazole?

Esomeprazole is a medication that treats stomach conditions by reducing excess stomach acid. It is mostly used to treat indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux and gastro-oesophageal disease (GORD). It can also be used to prevent stomach ulcers by reducing the amount of acid within the stomach.

How does it work?

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor medication that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. The proton pumps are enzymes in the lining of the stomach that are responsible for producing the stomach acid which is needed to digest food. Esomeprazole reduces the acid production by binding to the H+/K+ adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) enzyme on the parietal cells in the stomach, which is a part of the proton pump, thereby inhibiting acid production. 

Is Esomeprazole suitable for me?

Esomeprazole can be used to treat many conditions in both adults and children. However it may not be suitable for you if the following applies to you:

• If you are allergic to esomeprazole or any of the ingredients in the medication
• If you are allergic to other proton pump inhibitors such as pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, omeprazole etc.
• If you taking any medicines to treat HIV e.g. nelfinavir
• Taking Rifampicin
• Have severe liver problems

Esomeprazole can also treat indigestion, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and prevent stomach ulcers. This medication usually begins to work in a couple of days, however, can take up to 4 weeks to work fully.
