What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro contains an active substance called Tirzepatide, which is a novel drug that activates both the GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptors. It has been approved for use in the UK to treat Type 2 diabetes and to aid in weight management for overweight and obese adults. It is recommended for ONCE weekly use as a subcutaneous injection. 

What is Mounjaro and how does it work?

Mounjaro is a dual agonist for GLP-1 and GIP hormones. It increases insulin secretion and sensitivity. It reduces glucagon secretion and slows down gastric emptying. It has a positive effect on blood glucose balance and reduces appetite, thereby reducing caloric intake. Its dual activity improves hyperglycaemia much more significantly than a GLP-1 agonist. In clinical trials, individuals taking Mounjaro achieved up to a 20% reduction in body weight compared to those receiving a placebo.

Is Mounjaro right for me?

If you suffer from obesity, Mounjaro may be an effective treatment. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:

• an allergy to tirzepatide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• severe issues with digesting food or keeping food down (severe gastroparesis)
• history of pancreatitis
• an issue with your eyes such as diabetic retinopathy or macular oedema
• using a sulphonylurea (e.g. Gliclazide) or insulin
• have type-1 diabetes

Always take Mounjaro exactly as prescribed by your doctor or advised by the pharmacist. 

Mounjaro dose:

• The starting dose of Mounjaro is 2.5 mg once a week for four weeks. After four weeks the doctor may increase the dose to 5 mg once a week.
• The prescriber may increase the Mounjaro dose by 2.5 mg increments to 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, or 15 mg once a week if tolerated. Depending on each case the doctor will tell you to stay on a particular dose for at least 4 weeks before going to a higher dose.
• Before using the pen for the first time, the doctor or nurse will show you how to use the pen.
• You can use Mounjaro at any time of the day, with or without food, however, try to take Mounjaro at the same time each day. 
• Do not change Mounjaro dose unless advised by the prescriber.

Mounjaro may not be safe if taken with other medication or recreational drugs. Please inform the prescriber if you are taking any medications.

DO NOT take Mounjaro:

• If you are taking any other medications, please consult with your healthcare provider first, as other medications may interact with Mounjaro. 
• If you are using insulin or sulphonylurea (e.g. Gliclazide)
• If you have a family history of thyroid cancer
• If you have type-1 diabetes
• An allergy to tirzepatide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• Severe issues with digesting food or keeping food down (severe gastroparesis)
• History of pancreatitis
• You have a problem with your eyes (diabetic retinopathy or macular oedema)
