What is the Mefloquine mechanism of action?
Mefloquine works by interfering with the growth of parasites in the blood. It is effective against both erythrocytic (blood) and exoerythrocytic (liver) stages of the parasite's life cycle. Mefloquine can be used for prevention or treatment of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malaria. It is also effective against chloroquine-resistant strains of P. falciparum.
How is Mefloquine used?
Mefloquine is usually taken as a single dose, once a week. It can be taken with or without food. If you vomit within 1 hour after taking mefloquine, take another dose. You should start taking mefloquine 1 to 2 weeks before you travel to an area where there is malaria. To help keep from getting malaria, take mefloquine every week during your stay and for 4 weeks after you leave the area. Mefloquine can be given for prevention of malaria starting 1 week before travel and continued for 4 weeks after leaving the risk area.
