What is Metronidazole?

Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections. It can be used to treat a wide variety of infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections and GI tract infections.

What is Metronidazole?

Metronidazole is an antibiotic medication that kills bacteria and parasites in the body. It can treat many kinds of infections including Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). 

How does it work?

For BV, this antibiotic works by killing the excess bacteria and returns the correct balance of bacteria back to the vagina. 

Is Metronidazole suitable for me?

If you are experiencing symptoms of BV including a thin and watery discharge and a strong fish smell, ask your doctor about the best treatment options for you.

Dosage

Commonly Used Dosage Guidelines for Metronidazole.

Take one tablet twice a day for seven days. Take with or after food.

Side Effects

All medications can cause potential side effects, below we have listed some potential side effects, however, these do not always occur.

  • Numbness, tingling, pain or a feeling of weakness in the arms or legs
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Furred tongue
  • Feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting), upset stomach, or diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Feeling depressed
  • Pain in your eyes (optic neuritis)

Additional Information

Metronidazole is also sometimes used to treat other conditions, such as rosacea or certain types of diarrhoea. Metronidazole is available in both oral and topical forms.

 

Metronidazole Side Effects 

Side effects of metronidazole include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, dizziness, and metallic taste. Some people may also experience a rash or hives. If you experience any serious side effects, such as severe abdominal pain or difficulty breathing, you should seek medical attention immediately.

 

Metronidazole is a prescription medication, so it should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not take metronidazole.

 

Metronidazole can interact with other medications, so be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Metronidazole should not be used with alcohol, as this can result in severe side effects.
