Why is checking blood sugar levels important?
Measuring blood sugar is important for those with diabetes, or for those at risk of diabetes. These monitors can be used to determine the effect your medications are having on your overall blood glucose levels, or to understand how other lifestyle factors may be affecting your blood glucose.
What level of blood sugar is dangerous?
Recommended blood sugar levels for type 2 diabetics before meals are between 4 to 7 mmol/L. After meals (at least 90 minutes), this should be under 8.5 mmol/L.
For those with type 1 diabetes, this level should be 4 to 7 mmol/L before meals and 5 to 9 mmol/L after meals (at least 90 minutes). The level should also be between 5 to 7 mmol/L upon waking.
When should I test my blood sugar?
When you should test your blood sugar may depend on the type of diabetes you have. If you have type 1, you may be instructed by your healthcare provider to test up to 10 times a day, this may revolve around your meals, snacks, exercise routines and during the night.
If you have type 2 diabetes, you may also need to check multiple times a day. Testing for type 2 diabetes levels will likely be before your meals and bedtime.
How to reduce blood sugar level immediately?
If you need to reduce your blood sugar quickly, you need to take fast-acting insulin. This is often injected and can take up to 4 hours to be fully absorbed.
Other non-medicinal options include walking and drinking more water to flush our excess blood sugar.
