What is Sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan is a medication used for relieving symptoms of migraines and cluster headaches. It is an active ingredient belonging to the drugs classed as 'triptans'.  It is available in various formulations such as tablets, injections and nasal sprays. The  tablets may take 30-60 mins to work but the injection and nasal spray work much quicker. 

How does it work?

Sumatriptan specifically works by selectively activating certain serotonin receptors, known as 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors, which are found on the blood vessels in the brain. Migraine symptoms are caused by temporary widening of the blood vessels in the head. Sumatriptan causes the blood vessels to constrict, reducing the blood flow to the brain and relieving the symptoms of migraines, such as headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Is Sumatriptan right for me?

It is important to note that Sumatriptan is not a preventative medication for migraines and should only be taken when a migraine has already started. It is also not effective for other types of headaches. This medication may not be suitable for you if you have the following:

• Cardiovascular disease
• Uncontrolled hypertension
• Peripheral vascular disease
• Liver disease
• Allergies to the triptans
• Taking ergotamine or other triptans for migraines

Commonly Used Dosage Guidelines for Sumatriptan

Sumatriptan 50 mg: 1 tablet (some patients may require 2 tablets); dose may be repeated after at least 2 hours if migraine recurs; max. 6 tablets in 24 hours 

Sumatriptan 100 mg: 1 tablet at onset of symptoms; dose may be repeated after at least 2 hours if migraine recurs; maximum of 3 tablets in 24 hours.
