Bariatric Wheelchairs

Bariatric wheelchairs are made for users that may weigh more than other wheelchairs will support, debunking the myth that "bariatric" refers to models with more complications or features. These specialized wheelchairs will be safer, stronger, and more comfortable than standard wheelchairs. Bariatric wheelchairs are built with more durable materials and reinforced frames. Many will also feature wider seats, and heavy-duty components, combining all those features for longer-term safety and movement.

At Welzo, we have a premium range of bariatric and heavy-duty wheelchairs that are designed to be strong, suitable for mobility needs, and comfortable, while also being respectful of the dignity and independence of the user. Welzo also has a vast collection of hundreds of wheelchairs.

What Is a Bariatric Wheelchair?

A bariatric wheelchair (also known as a heavy-duty wheelchair) is specifically designed for users with a body weight of 21 stone (136kg) or more, and some models provide support up to 45 stone (285kg). Bariatric wheelchair features include:

  • Extra wide seat widths (20"-30")
  • High strength steel or reinforced aluminum frames
  • Puncture-proof or heavy-duty tires
  • Double cross braces for added stability
  • Comfort-based cushioning and adjustable support for comfort of use

While the design of the wheelchair is robust to fit the general needs of bariatric users, many still fold or are easily transportable and provide ease of use in daily roles with detachable footrests and armrests that will ease user pressure when in a seated position and general access to and from the wheelchair.

Expert's Opinion on Bariatric Mobility Aids

As stated by John Radcliffe, mobility equipment specialist and rehabilitation advisor:

"Bariatric wheelchairs are not about size - they are about safe posture, and psychological benefits of mobility. A suitably fitted heavy-duty wheelchair means a reduction in the risk of pressure sores, improvements in respiratory health and restoring a person's confidence."

Comfort is an issue when relating to bariatric mobility. Comfort is the reason many bariatric designs have high density foam seating with pressure relief cushion options, and the option for adjustable elevating leg rests for comfort and support when in a seated position for a length of time.

Who Should Consider a Bariatric Wheelchair?

Bariatric wheelchairs would be suitable for:

  • Plus size individuals who require extra room and support
  • Individuals recovering from surgery who may have limited mobility
  • Long-term conditions such as lymphoedema or osteoarthritis
  • Care facilities, homecare providers and hospitals

Whether the need for a wheelchair is temporary and an issue with a lack of mobility, or comfort is a concern for using an everyday wheelchair, bariatric wheelchairs provide the needed security, comfort, and durability to fit those user groups and those larger needs without being an issue.
