EMLA Cream contains the drugs lidocaine and prilocaine. These are part of a class of medications known as local anaesthetics.

Skin's surface is temporarily numbed by EMLA Cream. It is applied to the skin prior to certain medical procedures. This helps to alleviate skin pain, but you may still experience pressure and touch.

A doctor or nurse should oversee the use of EMLA Cream on the genitals. The location, amount, and duration of application depend on the procedure. Your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse will apply the cream or instruct you on how to do it. If self-applying, obtain dressings from your healthcare provider to use with EMLA. When used on the genitals, supervision by a healthcare professional is required.

For adults and adolescents (12 years and older):
- For minor procedures (e.g., needle insertions or minor skin surgeries): Apply 2g in a thick layer for 1 to 5 hours under a dressing.
- For hospital procedures needing deeper anesthesia (e.g., split-skin grafting): Apply 1.5g to 2g per 10 cm² for 2 to 5 hours under a dressing.
- For larger areas of newly shaven skin (e.g., hair removal): Apply 1.5g per 10 cm² for 1 to 5 hours under a dressing.
- For genital skin before local anesthetic injections (adult men only): Apply 1g per 10 cm² for 15 minutes under a dressing.
- For genital skin before minor surgeries (e.g., wart removal for adults only): Apply 5g to 10g for 10 minutes without a dressing. Start the procedure immediately.
- For leg ulcers before cleaning or debridement: Apply 1-2g per 10 cm², up to 10g total, under an airtight dressing for 30 to 60 minutes. Remove with cotton gauze and cleanse immediately. Can be used up to 15 times over 1-2 months.

For children:
- For minor procedures (e.g., needle insertions or minor skin surgeries):
- Newborns and infants under 3 months: Up to 1g on a 10 cm² area for 1 hour, once in 24 hours.
- Infants 3-12 months: Up to 2g on a 20 cm² area for 1 hour, max

Avoid using EMLA Cream if you are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, or any other ingredients in the cream. Consult your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before using EMLA Cream if you or your child have anemia, glucose-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, methaemoglobinaemia, atopic dermatitis, are a pre-term newborn, or are under 12 months and taking other medicines affecting blood pigment levels. Inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal products, as EMLA Cream can interact with them. Specifically, mention if you or your child have used sulphonamides, other local anesthetics, or medications for irregular heartbeat like mexiletine or amiodarone. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss with your healthcare provider before using EMLA Cream, as its ingredients can pass into breast milk, though generally not harmful. EMLA Cream contains polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil, which may cause skin reactions. Use EMLA Cream as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not apply on cuts, grazes, wounds (except leg ulcers), rashes, eczema, near the eyes, inside the nose, ear, mouth, anus, or on children's genitals. Avoid using on newly shaved skin larger than 600 cm², and do not exceed 60 g. Keep EMLA Cream out of your eyes; if contact occurs, rinse with lukewarm water or saline. If swallowed, seek medical advice immediately. If you use more than recommended, contact your healthcare provider even if you have no symptoms. Overdose symptoms include dizziness, tingling around the mouth, numbness of the tongue, abnormal taste, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, and risk of acute methaemoglobinaemia. Severe overdose may cause seizures, low blood pressure, slowed or stopped breathing, and altered heartbeat, which can be life-threatening. For any questions, consult your healthcare provider. EMLA Cream may cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Severe allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention. Common side effects include redness, slight swelling, or pale skin at the application site. Uncommon effects include mild burning or itching. Rare effects include mild allergic reactions, small red dots on the skin, and eye irritation if the cream gets into the eyes. Report any serious or unlisted side effects to your healthcare provider.
