Description

Zelleta as a Contraception

Zelleta is a progesterone-only pill (POP) that contains the progestogen desogestrel. A POP, or mini-pill, is different to other types of birth control pills known as combined pills which contain oestrogen. Zelleta is a medication that, when taken correctly, can be up to 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Progesterone-only pills are a suitable alternative for people who cannot take oestrogen such as when breastfeeding, if you smoke or if you are overweight.

What is Zelleta and how does it work?

The Zelleta pill contains a synthetic hormone known as desogestrel. Mini pills work by preventing sperm cells from entering the womb by thickening the lining of the cervix. Zelleta is slightly different from other POPs as for most people, it contains a high enough dose to prevent the egg cell from ripening.

Is Zelleta right for me?

If you are looking for an effective oral contraceptive, Zelleta may be right for you. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:

  • If you are allergic to desogestrel or any other ingredients of this medicine

  • If you have ever had a blood clot or are at risk of a blood clot
  • If you have severe heart, liver or kidney problems
  • If you are suspected of having breast cancer
  • If you have unexplained bleeding from the vagina
  • If you are taking medication for hepatitis C

What to do if you there is a missed pill when taking Zelleta?

  • If you have forgotten to take the tablet and you are less than 12 hours late:

Take the missed pill as soon as you remember and take the next one at the usual time. The Zelleta pill will still protect you from pregnancy.

  • If you are more than 12 hours late.

If you are more than 12 hours late in taking any tablet, you may not be completely protected against pregnancy. Take a tablet as soon as you remember and take the next one at the usual time. This may mean that you take 2 in one day. You should continue to take your tablets as usual but you must also use an extra method of contraception, such as a condom or other barrier method, for the next 7 days.

Do you get periods on Zelleta?

There is a chance that this medication will cause vaginal bleeding, either slight staining or heavier bleeding. This is not a sign that the medication is not working.

You should continue to take the medication as normal if this occurs. However, if the bleeding is heavy or prolonged, you should consult your doctor.

Does Zelleta cause weight loss?

Weight loss is not a listed side effect of this medication. Weight increase, however is a listed side effect that may affect less than 1 in 10 women.

Is Zelleta the same as Cerazette?

Zelleta and Cerazette both contain the same amount (75mg) of the active ingredient desogestrel. Both pills are considered to work in the same way to prevent pregnancy.
