Asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are breathing conditions that primarily affect the lungs and can cause a range of breathing difficulties. Asthma often occurs after exposure to a trigger, however, it can happen randomly. Triggers may include common allergies to pollen or animal dander, infections, environmental changes or from exercise.
The Flixotide Accuhaler is an inhaler device used to help prevent asthma attacks from occurring. This is a preventer inhaler suitable for daily use and should not be used in cases of sudden asthma attacks.
What is a Flixotide Accuhaler and how does it work?
Flixotide Accuhaler contains the active ingredient fluticasone propionate which is a corticosteroid. This type of medicine has an anti-inflammatory action which reduces swelling and irritation in the lungs. This inhaler provides a small dose of steroid medication to your lungs when inhaled.
Is a Flixotide Accuhaler right for me?
If you are diagnosed with asthma, COPD or other breathing condition, you may be prescribed a Flixotide Accuhaler by a doctor or healthcare professional. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:
- If you are allergic to any other ingredients in this medicine
- If you have (or have had) Tuberculosis or other lung infections
- If you are taking steroids to treat asthma
- If you are taking a protease inhibitor antiviral medicine, or cobicistat containing products
- If you are taking medicines used to treat fungal infections
Side Effects
All medications can cause potential side effects, below we have listed some potential side effects of the Flixotide Accuhaler. However, these do not always occur and are mostly mild in nature. But if you experience any prolonged or worrying side effects of the Flixotide Accuhaler, please discontinue the medication immediately and consult your doctor.
Common side effects include:
- Thrush in the moth and throat
- Sore tongue or throat
- Hoarseness of voice
How to use a Flixotide Accuhaler?
Always use a Flixotide Accuhaler exactly as prescribed by your doctor or advised by the pharmacist. The recommended starting dose for adults is 100 micrograms twice a day to treat asthma, however, in presence of other factors, this may be increased or decreased accordingly as per the prescriber's clinical judgement.
For adults:
- For mild asthma - The usual starting dose is 100 micrograms twice a day.
- For moderate to severe asthma - The usual starting dose is 250 to 500 micrograms twice a day
- The most taken should be 1000 micrograms twice a day.
Instructions:
- Stand or sit upright and start to breathe as slowly as possible right before using your inhaler
- Remove the cover and shake the inhaler 4 or 5 times
- Hold the inhaler upright and breathe out as far as is comfortable. Do not breathe in again yet
- Put the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth and close your lips. Do not bite
- Breathe in through your mouth and just after starting to breathe in, press down on the top of the canister to release a puff of medicine. Do this while breathing in steadily and deeply
- Hold your breathe and take the inhaler from your mouth
- Continue holding your breath for a few seconds.
Do not use your inhaler more often than the doctor told you to.

The Flixotide Accuhaler may not be safe if taken with other medication or recreational drugs. Please inform the prescriber if you are taking any of the listed medications.
DO NOT use the Flixotide Accuhaler:
