What is Utovlan?

Utovlan is a prescription medication used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding and delay oncoming periods.

Description

What is Utovlan?

This medication is able to treat or manage many menstruation symptoms including heavy, painful or irregular periods, premenstrual tension (PMT), endometriosis and breast cancer. However, it is mostly used as a period delay medication.

How does it work?

Utovlan belongs to a group of medicines called progestogens which are similar to the natural female progesterone hormone. It works to delay periods by keeping the progesterone levels high which prevents a period from starting as it normally would.

Is Utovlan suitable for me?

You will need a prescription to use this medication. This medication is most often used to delay a period as it can delay one for up to 17 days. This medication may not be suitable for everyone, so ask your doctor if Utovlan could be right for you.

Dosage

Taking Utovlan to delay a period:

You will usually take 1 tablet three times (15mg) a day. You need to start taking the tablets 3 days before your period is due to start. Your period will usually start within 3 days of finishing the tablets.

Side Effects

Bleeding and spotting between periods,

Unexpected or unusual vaginal bleeding and changes in discharge
Breast pain and tenderness
Milky discharge from the breast when not pregnant or breastfeeding

Difficulty sleeping and concentrating
Confusion
Nervousness
Feeling intense happiness
Feeling sleepy
Vision problems
Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
Dry mouth
Altered fat and blood sugar levels in the blood
Heart problems
Acne
Increase in facial or body hair
Hair loss
Itching, rash or hives
Weight gain
Fluid retention
Swelling of hands and ankles
Bloating
Raised temperature
Change in appetite or sex drive
Increased calcium (seen in blood tests)
