Almotriptan

Almotriptan is a migraine relief medication that is an effective and fast-acting solution. The medication narrows the blood vessels leading to the brain to reduce inflammation and relive pain.

What is Almotriptan?

Almotriptan is used for the treatment of migraine and different other types of headaches. It is a member of a class of drugs called the Triptans. It is not used for prophylactic purposes and has excellent efficacy for migraine.

How does it work?

This drug is taken with or without food through the oral route. Once absorbed into the blood, it reaches the brain and blocks a substance called serotonin, which is responsible for narrowing blood vessels in the brain. It also influences various nerves involved in the pain and to relieve the migraine. 

Is Almotriptan for me?

This drug is for you if you have;

  • Migraine
  • Other symptoms of migraine, e.g., sensitivity to sound/ light, nausea, vomiting etc.

It is used to treat the acute attacks of migraine and doesn't prevent the future onset of migraine

Side Effects

The doctor will prescribe the drug after weighing its side effects and benefits. However, you can expect the following;

  • Sleepiness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Numbness, tingling and burning sensation.
  • Nausea

Some less common side effects are;

  • Back pain
  • Aching
  • Anxiety
  • Moist cough
  • Belching
  • Taste disturbances
  • Warmth feeling
  • Redness/ flushing of the skin
  • Indigestion
  • Disturbed hearing
  • Bleeding issues
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Restlessness
  • Trembling

Dosages

Commonly used dosage guidelines for Almotriptan. 

The dosage depends upon your age.

For those under 18, children

The usage in this age group is not recommended as no safety data is available.

For adults (18-65 years)

The recommended dose is a single tablet of 12.5mg. However, an additional tablet may be required if the symptoms reappear within 24 hours. Remember that 2 doses (of 12.5mg) per day are the maximum permissible dose and shouldn't be exceeded.

For elders (more than 65 years)

The efficacy and safety in this age group are not known. So, it shouldn't be used for older adults.

The dosage recommendation also changes in case of hepatic or renal impairment.
