What is Serevent Evohaler Inhaler?

Serevent Evohaler for Asthma & Breathing Problems

Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are conditions that primarily affect the lungs and can cause a range of breathing difficulties. Asthma often occurs after exposure to a trigger, however, it can happen randomly. Triggers may include common allergies to pollen or animal dander, infections, environmental changes or from exercise.

The Serevent Evohaler is a long-acting bronchodilator that helps to keep the airways in the lungs open. This medication is prescribed to those who have breathing problems. If you have asthma, this medication can help to prevent asthma attacks.

The Serevent Evohaler is a preventative inhaler. This is not a reliever or rescue inhaler.

What is a Serevent Evohaler and how does it work?

Serevent contains the active ingredient salmeterol which is known as a long-acting bronchodilator. A bronchodilator is a medication that relaxes the muscles in the lungs and widens the airways which aid in preventing asthma or COPD attacks as it allows for more air to pass through so that you can breathe more. This medication is intended for when breathlessness or wheezing is started to come along, not for when you are already breathless and wheezy.

Serevent Evohaler contains norflurane which makes it typically less harmful to the environment than previous inhaler models. The Serevent Evohaler may also taste slightly different from other inhalers, however, this doesn't make a difference to how your medicine works.

Is a Serevent Evohaler right for me?

If you are diagnosed with asthma, COPD or other breathing condition, you may be prescribed a Serevent Evohaler by a doctor or healthcare professional. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:

If you are allergic to salmeterol or any other ingredients in this medicine
If you are currently being treated for any fungal infections
If you are taking beta blockers
If you are on medication for high blood pressure

Side Effects

All medications can cause potential side effects, below we have listed some potential side effects of the Serevent Evohaler. However, these do not always occur and are mostly mild in nature. But if you experience any prolonged or worrying side effects of the Serevent Evohaler, please discontinue the medication immediately and consult your doctor.

Common side effects include:

Headaches
Mouth and throat irritation
Feeling shaky
Muscle cramps

How to use a Serevent Evohaler?

Always use a Serevent Evohaler exactly as prescribed by your doctor or advised by the pharmacist. The recommended starting dose for adults is two puffs a day to relieve asthma, however, in presence of other factors, this may be increased or decreased accordingly as per the prescriber's clinical judgement.

For asthma and COPD:

To relieve from asthma and COPD: two puffs a day
For people with severe asthma, the dose may be increased by your doctor up to 4 puffs a day
The maximum dose is 8 puffs in a 24-hour period

Instructions:

Start to breathe as slowly as possible just before using your inhaler
Stand or sit upright when using
Remove the mouthpiece and inspect it to ensure it is clear of debris and objects
Shake the inhaler 4 or 5 times and hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base, breathe out
Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth and close your lips, do not bite it
Breathe in through your mouth and just after you begin your breath, press down on the top of the canister to release a puff of this medicine whilst still breathing in steadily and deeply
Hold your breath and take your inhaler from your mouth, continue holding your breath for a few seconds
It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, consult your doctor before using this medicine

Do not use your inhaler more often than the doctor told you to.
