What is Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is a medication used to treat stomach conditions associated with an excess of stomach acid including acid reflux. 

How does it work?

Omeprazole is a medication called a proton pump inhibitor. Proton pumps are responsible for producing stomach acid. When there is an excess of acid in the stomach it causes problems in the gut including heartburn and acid reflux. By prohibiting the proton pumps, less acid will be made and the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux will be reduced.

Is Omeprazole suitable for me?

Omeprazole can be used to treat many conditions in both adults and children. However it may not be suitable for you if the following applies to you:

• If you are allergic to omeprazole or any of the ingredients in the medication
• If you are allergic to other proton pump inhibitors such as pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole etc.
• If you taking any medicines to treat HIV e.g nelfinavir
• taking Rifampicin
• have severe liver problems

Commonly Used Dosage Guidelines for Omeprazole.

Take 1 capsule daily, increase to 2 capsules daily if required. Maximum of 4 weeks continuous use.

Omeprazole may not be safe if taken with other medication or recreational drugs. Please inform the prescriber if you are taking any of the listed medications.

• Clozapine
• Phenytoin
• Ciclosporin
• Cilostazol
• Diazepam
• Tacrolimus
• Methotrexate
• Erlotinib
• Digoxin
• Clopidogrel
• Rifampicin
• St. Johns Wort
• Any Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and Diclofenac
• Alendronic Acid
• Dasatinib or Dabrafenib
• Other Proton Pump Inhibitors
• Citalopram, Escitalopram
• Gefitinib
• Vitamin B12, Cyanocobalamin and Hydroxocobalamin
