Description
What is Dianette?
Dianette is a hormonal contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy and treat acne. Dianette has a strong success rate at preventing unwanted pregnancy and is often prescribed when traditional acne treatments have not been successful.
How does it work?
It has two active ingredients; ethinylestradiol, a synthetic oestrogen and cyproterone, an anti-androgen. Androgens are the male hormones produced in some women, causing unwanted hair growth and oily skin. By reducing androgen, cyproterone reverses these effects. That's why it is often recommended to treat acne. Ethinylestradiol prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation, the release of an egg.
Is it suitable for me?
It is suitable for women of reproductive age who want contraception and to treat acne. However, consult the doctor for non-hormonal options if you want to treat acne alone.

When should the use of Dianette be avoided?
It should be avoided if you;
- Are allergic to it
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Using any other hormonal contraceptive
- Have clotting issues
- Have liver disease
- Had a heart attack in the past or are exposed to the cardiac risk factors
- Have visual disturbances or migraine
- Have a history of breast cancer
What if I forget to take Dianette?
If less than 12 hours have passed since the last forgotten pill, take the pill as soon as you remember. If more than 12 hours have passed, you have a risk of unwanted pregnancy and should go for emergency contraception.
Does Dianette protect me from sexually transmitted diseases?
No. It is just a contraceptive and doesn't offer any protection against sexually transmitted infections. You still need safe sex precautions to prevent STIs.
How long does Dianette take to treat acne?
For most users, the changes are visible within 3-6 months of regular use. However, there is no guarantee, as acne could be due to various other reasons which have nothing to do with Dianette.
What will happen in case of accidental overdosing from Dianette?
If you have taken more than one pill accidentally, you are more likely to experience side effects. It in no way is going to harm you. However, it is good to tell the doctor.
How good is Dianette for contraception?
This combined pill comes with excellent efficacy. The efficacy for good usage is more than 99%.
Can Dianette cause weight gain?
Weight gain is one of the rare side effects of Dianette and other hormonal contraceptives. It is due to water retention in the body. However, this effect is not unique to it and can be experienced with any hormonal contraceptive. Consult the doctor to manage the weight gain.
