Everything you need to know about Ovex

Ovex Suspension is a medicine that can be used to treat threadworm (sometimes known as pinworm) infections of the gut. This is a common condition where tiny worms called threadworms hatch out of threadworm eggs and travel through your intestine and into your stomach. These worms then leave your body when they move down into the bowel of your intestinal system.

The medicine contains mebendazole, which is one of a group of medicines called 'anthelmintics'. It kills the worm by preventing it from reproducing. This medicine is for use in adults and children aged over 2 years.

What are threadworms?

Threadworms are worm-like parasites that live in the large intestine. They measure about 1/8 inch long and are white or light brown in colour. Threadworms can be seen with the naked eye and are very common in dogs and cats. The worms most often enter a dog or cat by eating soil contaminated with animal faeces.

The worms travel through the small intestine, where they cause extreme discomfort for their hosts by eating their way through tissue and producing a foul-smelling fluid.

In some cases, threadworms leave their hosts without causing any symptoms. However, if left untreated, they may eventually cause severe intestinal damage and lead to the death of their hosts.

Threadworms are common in children and as a result, they may spread to the whole family. Threadworm infections emerge at night and can be found on your child's bottom or in faecal matter. You may notice the symptoms as it can cause an excessively scratchy vagina or anus, night-time awakenings and general irritation. Weight loss and itchy skin around the anus are less typical symptoms.

In the UK, threadworms are a typical type of worm infection, especially in kids under 10. Poor hygiene is the main cause of an infection of worms because poor hygiene, often as a result of sucking fingers and biting your nails. This may then spread the infection around your house and other household members may be infected too.

How to avoid threadworms?

Although it is not always possible to avoid a threadworm infection, you can significantly lower your risk by practising good hygiene and encouraging your younger children to do so as well. Young kids should wash their hands frequently, especially after using the restroom and before eating. Kitchen and bathroom surfaces should be kept clean. If any of your children catch threadworms, try to encourage them not to scratch the damaged area all over their anus or uterus, It will help to prevent infection and the spread of the infection from the infected child to others.

Good hygiene practices and hygiene measures will prevent the infection from spreading. Change your bed sheet after every day to follow hygiene measures if you have threadworms. It might be avoided if you wear cotton gloves before sleep. Change your night clothes after every night and you must take hygiene measures for the immediate elimination of threadworms.

How long does Ovex take to work?

Ovex is a recommended treatment that you can use for threadworm treatment. It is an oral medication that is taken by mouth. It will not work immediately as it will take time for the medicine to work. You should start taking the medicine as soon as possible.

How long does Ovex take to work?

Ovex tablets work by preventing worms from soaking up the carbohydrates they require for survival. Ovex kills threadworms but does not kill threadworm eggs, which can end up causing re-infection and infecting other people. The time it takes Ovex to work depends on how severe your threadworm infection is and how fast you respond to treatment. If you have mild symptoms, it may take up to a few weeks before they go away completely with Ovex treatment alone. For more severe cases that cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting, it could take several months before all your symptoms have gone away.

In some cases, it may be necessary for you to take another medication along with Ovex called Diflucan (fluconazole) for several weeks or months after starting This treatment until all symptoms of the threadworm infection have gone away completely. This is because Diflucan helps kill mature threadworms in your body that survived the initial round of threadworm treatment with Ovex.

How long does Ovex stay in your system

Ovex can stay in your system for up to 3 months, but it's unlikely that you'll need treatment for longer than 2 weeks. Most people will only need 1 dose of Ovex every 2 weeks.

If you take Ovex for threadworm with another medicine that treats hookworms or roundworms, you won't need any other medication.

How long does it take for Ovex to kill threadworms?

Ovex is available in liquid suspension form, which means it needs to be mixed with a small amount of water before being swallowed. It should be taken once a day until the worm dies or it is no longer needed. After this point, the medication should be stopped and another course administered if necessary.

It takes about four weeks for Ovex to kill threadworms in adults, but this time frame may vary depending on the number of parasites present and other factors such as age and weight. The medication has been shown to work well on most types of worms, including hookworm, pinworm, whipworm and roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides).

How to Take Ovex tablets?

Ovex tablets are to be taken by mouth with or without food.

If you forget to take Ovex tablets, take them as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Do not take more than 5 tablets in a day. Do not take Ovex tablets for more than 21 days in a row unless advised by your doctor.

Take just one dose at the same time each day, preferably with food (such as before breakfast). Follow these steps:

  • Take just one dose with water on an empty stomach at around the same time each day

  • Do not eat or drink anything except plain water for 30 minutes before taking Ovex tablets

  • Take one tablet with plain water after 30 minutes

How long does Ovex take to stop itching symptoms?

Ovex will take two weeks to begin working, but it can take up to six months before the itching goes away completely.

Itching is the result of your body fighting off parasites. As you treat overgrowth, you may notice that your skin becomes more sensitive and itchy. This is normal and should subside after treatment is complete.

It’s important to use Ovex regularly for at least two weeks in order to reduce inflammation and prevent recurrence by stopping the overgrowth of parasites.

The itchiness associated with parasite infection usually subsides within 2-3 months after beginning treatment. However, some people continue to experience mild symptoms for several months afterwards if they have a lot of worms or if their immune system is weak (which means they can’t fight off the parasites).

Side Effects of Ovex

The health protection agency suggests Ovex tablets as one of the ideal treatments for threadworm infection.
