Ovysmen is a form of combined contraception that is taken to prevent unwanted pregnancy for women. It is an oral birth control pill to be taken consecutively for 21 days with a 7-day break or alternatively, depending on your consultation with the GP or doctor. It also helps alleviate symptoms of menstruation.
What is Ovysmen and how does it work?
The pill contains synthetic progesterone and oestrogen. These hormones are also produced by the body. Ovysmen works by altering the hormonal balance of the body to prevent ovulation by making the lining of the uterus less receptive to egg implantation.
Is Ovysmen right for me?
If you are looking for an effective oral contraceptive, Ovysmen may be right for you. However, it may not be suitable for you if you have the following:
- If you are allergic to norethisterone, ethinylestradiol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- If you are currently pregnant
- If you have ever had a blood clot or are at risk of a blood clot
- If you have severe heart, liver or kidney problems
- If you have high or low blood pressure
- If you have (or have had) a high level of fats in your blood, or other disorders of body fats
- If you have ever had a migraine with an aura
- If you are suspected of having cancer of the breast, cervix, vagina or womb
- If you have unexplained bleeding from the vagina
- If you are taking medication for hepatitis C

How to take Ovysmen?
Always take Ovysmen exactly as prescribed by your doctor or advised by the pharmacist.
- Ovysmen should be taken every day for 21 days
- Take your pill at the same time every day
- Start by taking a pill marked with the correct day of the week
- Follow the directions of the arrows on the strip and take a pill every day until you have finished all 21
- Then have 7 pill-free days
- Start your next strip of Ovysmen after the 7 pill-free days, even if you are still bleeding
- It can be taken with or without food, if necessary with a small amount of water
- You must not take Ovysmen if you are pregnant
- It is not advised to take Ovysmen while breast-feeding

Ovysmen may not be safe if taken with other medication or recreational drugs. Please inform the prescriber if you are taking any of the listed medications.
DO NOT take Ovysmen:

What kind of pill is Ovysmen?
Ovysmen is a combined hormonal contraceptive pill, which contains two hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by thickening the mucus in the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to swim through and fertilise an egg. The pill also thinning the lining of the womb, making it less likely for a fertilised egg to implant and grow.
Does Ovysmen cause weight gain?
There is no evidence to suggest that Ovysmen causes weight gain. In fact, many women report losing weight while taking this pill.

How is the medication delivered?

When should I take Ovysmen?
You should take one Ovysmen pill every day, at the same time each day. It doesn't matter what time of day you take it, as long as you take it at the same time each day.
You can take the pill with or without food, but if you find that it upsets your stomach, it's best to take it with food.
If you vomit or have diarrhoea within three to four hours of taking a pill, it's possible that the pill hasn't been fully absorbed into your system. In this case, you should take another pill straight away. If you don't have another pill available, you can use emergency contraception.
Who can take Ovysmen?
Ovysmen is suitable for most women, but there are some women who should not take the pill. These include women who:
- are pregnant or think they might be pregnant
- have ever had a blood clot in their leg (thrombosis), lungs (pulmonary embolism) or other parts of their body
- have ever had a stroke
- have ever had angina or heart attacks
- have certain inherited blood-clotting disorders
- have or have ever had breast cancer
- have certain liver diseases
How do I order my medication?
