Total Cholesterol

Total cholesterol measures the total amount of cholesterol in your blood, including HDL and LDL. Cholesterol is created in the liver and plays an important role in multiple bodily functions such as; creating vitamin D and bile and being the membrane of all of your body's cells. Cholesterol helps to transport fatty acids around through the blood, and can act as a great indicator of your heart health, such as predispositions to cardiovascular issues such as a heart attack and heart disease.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a significant role in various bodily functions. It is best known for its importance in maintaining healthy bones and teeth because it aids in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the food we eat. Additionally, it also supports immune system function and has roles in cell growth modulation, neuromuscular functions, and inflammation reduction.

Vitamin D is unique because it can be synthesized by the body through the exposure of the skin to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B radiation. Nonetheless, during the winter months or in geographic areas with less sunlight, or due to lifestyle factors like spending more time indoors or using sunblock, many people may not get enough Vitamin D, which can lead to deficiency. Certain dietary sources like fatty fish, cheese, egg yolks, and fortified foods (like milk or cereals) can also provide Vitamin D, but it can be challenging to get enough through diet alone.

As a biomarker, Vitamin D is often assessed in home health tests, typically through a simple blood test. In particular, the test measures the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in the blood, which is the main form of Vitamin D in the blood and the best general indicator of overall Vitamin D status.

Vitamin D deficiency is defined as a 25(OH)D below 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/l), and Vitamin D insufficiency as a 25(OH)D of 20–29 ng/ml (50–74 nmol/l). Normal levels are considered to be above 30 ng/ml (75 nmol/l), although exact "optimal" blood levels of Vitamin D are still somewhat under debate among experts.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to a number of health issues, including:

Bone Health: Rickets in children, a condition that results in soft bones and skeletal deformities, and osteomalacia in adults, resulting in weak bones and muscle weakness.

Immune Function: Lower immune function and a higher susceptibility to infection.

Chronic Diseases: Emerging research suggests potential links between low Vitamin D levels and an increased risk of certain types of cancers, autoimmune diseases, neurological diseases, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease.

Home health tests for Vitamin D levels are particularly important for certain high-risk groups, including older adults, people with limited sun exposure, people with darker skin, and people with disorders that limit their body's ability to absorb or convert Vitamin D. It's always important to discuss your results with a healthcare provider, who can provide personalized advice and potential treatment options if your Vitamin D levels are low.

HDL Cholesterol

HDL is an abbreviation for high-density lipoprotein and is often referred to as the 'good cholesterol' because of its role in removing other forms of cholesterol from your body. HDL can help to protect your heart and blood vessels due to its anti-inflammatory effect, anti-oxidant properties and its ability to remove excess fat to the liver for processing. Therefore having optimal HDL levels is essential to your health. Our Welzo HDL test will identify your HDL levels and give insight into improvements that need to be made to help boost your HDL levels.

LDL Cholesterol

LDL or Low-density lipoprotein helps the body transport fat such as Triglycerides. However, LDL is often referred to as the 'bad' cholesterol because when your LDL levels are elevated, you face an increased risk of cardiovascular issues. These include heart attack and heart disease. This occurs as LDL can lead to fatty deposits accruing in the artery walls leading to atherosclerosis.

hs-CRP

To check inflammation levels, we conducted an advanced CRP evaluation. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a protein found in the blood which increases in response to inflammation. CRP is produced by the liver in response to inflammation. It is a biomarker of inflammation that is strongly associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack and stroke. High levels of CRP are found in people with chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and in people who have had a recent heart attack or stroke. CRP is not a specific marker for any one disease, but it is a valuable indicator of inflammation.

Cortisol (Stress Levels)

Cortisol is a steroid hormone that your body produces in the adrenal glands, which are located just above your kidneys. It is commonly referred to as the "stress hormone" because it's secreted at higher levels during the body's response to stress, but it's also involved in a variety of other bodily functions.

Cortisol plays a crucial role in various aspects of human physiology, including:

Stress response: It helps your body respond to stress, such as physical injury or danger. When you encounter a threat, your hypothalamus, a tiny region at your brain's base, sets off an alarm system in your body. This results in adrenal glands producing a surge of hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure, and boosts energy supplies. Cortisol curbs functions that would be nonessential in a fight or flight situation.

Metabolism regulation: Cortisol helps maintain blood sugar levels and helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats from the food we eat, ensuring that our bodies have a constant and sufficient energy supply.

Inflammation reduction: It also has anti-inflammatory properties. This means it can help reduce inflammation in the body, which is essential for conditions where inflammation is a significant component, like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.

Blood pressure and cardiovascular function: It also helps regulate blood pressure and supports the functioning of the cardiovascular system.

Sleep/wake cycle: Cortisol follows a daily rhythm, with levels peaking in the morning to help you wake up and decrease throughout the day. It's a part of the body's natural circadian rhythm.

In the context of health, it's important to note that while cortisol is essential for these bodily functions, too much or too little can lead to health problems. Chronic high levels of cortisol can lead to conditions like Cushing's syndrome, while insufficient production can lead to Addison's disease.

As a biomarker, cortisol levels are often used to evaluate the response of the body to stress. This can be in terms of acute stress (like illness or physical trauma) or chronic stress (long-term stress related to life situations or chronic illness). Additionally, cortisol measurements can also help in the diagnosis of adrenal gland disorders. Salivary, blood, or urinary tests are usually employed to measure cortisol levels in the body.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a blood fat playing an essential part in the healthy function of your body. Triglycerides are the body's primary storage method for fat and can be used as an energy source. Triglycerides are created in the liver, and while they are essential for energy and fat storage, having elevated levels of triglycerides can lead to cardiovascular issues. Therefore it is crucial to monitor your triglycerides when checking overall cholesterol levels.

Total Cholesterol: HDL %

HDL, high-density lipoprotein) percentage of total calculates the amount of HDL you have compared to your total cholesterol level. This specific test biomarker assesses your cardiovascular risk by calculating the total amount of 'good' vs 'bad' and total cholesterol you have in your blood. Doctors and heart disease assessment calculators use this % of the total to evaluate your overall cardiovascular health.

Non-HDL Cholesterol

While we are individually measuring your HDL and LDL levels in this test, we will also carry out a non-HDL cholesterol check. This essentially includes all harmful cholesterol in your blood sample and is considered a primary indicator and risk assessment tool for cardiovascular health. Non-HDL levels should generally be below 4mmol/L. HDL and LDL levels can then be monitored to evaluate how any implementation of diet and lifestyle changes impacts your individual cholesterol levels, helping you to optimise your lifestyle based on your biomarkers.

Have you been feeling any of these symptoms lately?

The Heart Disease Risk Blood Test is suitable for individuals with one or more of the following conditions:

1. High Blood Pressure

2. Cardiovascular history

3. High Cholesterol

4. Diabetes

5. Stressful Lifestyle

Why take a test?

The Advanced Heart Health Blood test will assess your heart health. It also checks for any factors that may directly have an impact on your heart health such as cholesterol levels and inflammation caused due to illness or infection. If you have a history of heart disease that runs in the family, it is likely you could be affected. Take a simple finger-prick blood test and find out.

7%
million individuals in the UK
suffer from a cardiovascular disease at any given point. You may be at a higher risk if you are diabetic, smoker, have high blood pressure or cholesterol.
1.5%
of the population is estimated to have been born with a heart defect
According to the British Heart Foundation, there are at least 1 in every 150 births that will be diagnosed with a heart defect. Some congenital heart problems are not discovered until the child is older or even an adult.

Experts Opinion on Heart Health Tests

"Heart disease is very common and can be caused by many reasons. This panel monitors cholesterol levels and hs-CRP (High sensitivity CRP), a blood marker shown to be a risk factor for heart disease. This test can sensitively pick up if there is an inflammatory issue within the blood vessels, even at low levels."
